well right now, its at Voltech in glasgow who are a volvo specialist who actually rang me and said they would clean all the connections and the err, thingy thats hiding in the passenger foot-well. sorry i forget what they called it.

They seem to think that will do it, but if not they said it might be the ecu and that would be 1200 to 1400 which frankly im fed up with bill like this for this car.

that thingy is the "CEM"
does the car have a sunroof by any chance? as its well known for the drains to block up (crap design end thanks volvo) which causes water & CEM mixing , never good
if it IS the connections to/from the CEM , there ARE replacment leads WITH the correct connectors on to sort the prob available direct from volvo (Far far less than£1200 !!) , check for "CEM " threads on here,, there is a post from CLAN giving the part number for the leads ,, you need 6 of iirc.

Given what you have described,, my best guess would be
If the car has a sun roof, Check for dampness/blocked front sunroof drains , (fix also detailed on forum,, easy DIY) dry the cem Clean the connectors + connector blocks , Test

If no sunroof , Still check /clean contacts, leads + plugs

Check Battery + alternator for correct output (use vida)

one thing to note with the "clean" contacts and plugs, using an abrasive cleaning *file/emery paper/sandpaper/etc is not advised as is Could make the fit between male/female terminals Looser than it needs to be = more of the same "oh ffs" that you have had, Use electrical contact cleaner to minimise the risk

95% of the V50/S40 that have these issues dont need a replacement CEM ! (unless Really badly damaged , usually by water / hamfisted filing by diy owner/clueless "garage" )

still start with the connectors to/from the CEM , electrical contact cleaner is Cheap compared to battery / alternator

Luck you with the "no sunroof",, you cant get the "joys" when the roof drains block up

Hi mark2410
I had similar issues about 18 months ago, turned out the CEM needed a good clean, no further similar issues since.
