That will almost certainly mean model year so your 1998 car can be a 1999 model year dependant on build week.
What exactly does your owner's manual say in full ref: pas fluid?

Well its either red or green
Orange means its was green and has been topped up with red, means cant be arsed to get correct fluid any will do and leaky seals and noisy operation as you have and non responsive steering They are two very different oils but hey Its your car EDIT: some of the manuals stated the fluid was dex3 when it was infact chf11s, which was volvos fault.

Right... so mine is a September 1998 build I believe. So the fluid level is correct at half way, yes?
Yes, clear orangey red. So, it should be green...? There appears to be no leak anywhere I can see. There is evidence of a leak at one point at the bottom jubilee clip but not any more. I'm not going back out in my pants now, but will double check the manual tomorrow.

Nope... scratch that. I've got the VIN wrong and can't find the V5 now.
Will check tomorrow properly.

You may be lucky that its only enough to change the colour of the fluid and not the properties
I would just buy a couple of litres of chf11s and drain the system on a Sunday afternoon

Fingers crossed. I'll nail the V5 tomorrow and check the manufacture date. I am getting 1998 and 1999 from online checking the VIN.
At least I rarely drive it and if I do, it's not for very far.

November 1998 was first use according to documentation. So, Sept build would probably be about right from my original post.
Green?
