Sorry to hear that.Who sold you a lemon, name and shame.
Maybe pursue it through small claims court as it clearly wasn’t fit for purpose or was it from eBay?
I have a 940tdic for sale at the moment if you want to start again with a good well looked after car.

Hiya and welcome

I think it's best to understand exactly what's wrong with the engine before deciding 'the engine is toast'.

Did they say exactly what's wrong with your current engine?

Easiest thing to do if yours really is cooked is find another running D24 engine - last I saw on eBay was BIN for £200.

There is the forum www.d24t.com which specialises in only the diesel 6 cylinder engines...

Not a bad idea to find out which engine it is - if pre 1993 it would be the D24T, if 1993 or later the D24Tic. There are differences in plumbing and internals so are not interchangeable without expert knowledge and fabrication. Obviously if you have a Volvo intercooler it's going to be the Tic. I'll have a look at the d24t head in the garage to get the vw part number (bought before I realized that what I had was the Tic and found out that there were differences).

If you're willing to give it a go yourself, I've got all of the specialist tools required to do a head gasket and cambelt change

I'd imagine the cost of doing a head gasket and top-end rebuild wouldn't be any more than finding and fitting a replacement D24T or alternative engine

From my limited knowledge of the diseasel Volvos, i'd say that was a D24 TIC.

Where did you buy it from? Even on a private sale these days it has to be fit for purpose unless specified in writing as only fit for spares or repair.

Also be wary of the garages that tell you the engine is beyond economic repair, especially if there is a car sales attached to the place.

Would be useful to know why it overheated as well, did you check the coolant level when you picked it up and has it lost coolant on the way? Or was it already empty and you just drove it? Was the water pump drive belt tight or loose so the water pump was slipping?

Was the thermostat stuck shut? It may be if it's had coolant system sealant put in.

The head number on the 740 D24T head in the garage is 075103373.
The number on the 940 outside is 075103373Q (D24Tic).
There is also a new cylinder head with designation 075103373R and if you come across this no anywhere please let me know.
