Transmission problem again? 09’ V50 2.0D
So, recently had my flywheel and clutch changed as they let go 2 weeks ago.
But noticed today the car seems to grind, well not even really a gear grind, but more of a slap or crunch into second gear! All other gears are fine and it sometimes doesn’t even do it, especially if I accelerate a bit harder in first before changing up into second. But if I drove normally and go to changed from 1st to 2nd it crunches. Doesn’t do it all the time mind, not sure if it’s when I’m changing gear slower or what not. But it also doesn’t do it changing down from 3rd to 2nd, doesn’t jump out of gear at all either. I’m hoping maybe the clutch needs bleeding a bit more? Or worst case maybe the second gear synchro has gone? But wouldn’t that grind no matter of engine revs or speed when changing gear? Anyone else had transmission problems with these cars? 2.0 diesel 2009 v50 r design. |

Not got a V50 but new clutch will need pushing the peddel further down to clear the clutch until it beds in.
If the clutch is dragging slightly and your syncro on second is a bit worn then that could give the crunch you hear. Musle memory is a big thing here, you have pressed that clutch many thousands of times and your leg knows where to go. You have changed something, ie the clutch and your leg needs to re learn the position it needs to go to. Give it a bit of time and practice before worrying while making a conscious effort to push the pedal to the floor. Paul. |

Update on this. Rebled the clutch and that’s all fine.
Still only slaps into second gear. But if I change gear slowly it doesn’t crunch, also if I double clutch in between 1st and 2nd it goes into 2nd smooth. I think this is a worn synchro. What I want to know is how long can I drive it like this? Being careful obviously and not slamming it into second. Just forked our nearly a grand for a new flywheel and clutch, don’t want another grand just yet on a recon gearbox! |

You’ll be fine, a worn synchro won’t really cause any issues apart from an annoying gear shift.
