Replacement power steering pump help / cost?!
Hi,
Juts had my XC90 (2001 D5) serviced at a Volvo independent and the garage have said that I need a replacement power steering pump. They reckon its around £650 fitted. My questions are whether the job is difficult to do it yourself? Is it an involve task with moving loads of ancillaries? I am fairly competent but are there any guides? Struggling to find online. Second question is, would you recommend buying a reconditioned pump and then going to a garage for them to fit them self? is it a specialist Volvo task or could any car garage do it if i gave them the right pump? What would a garage roughly charge just for labour? Thanks for your help! Jonny |

Hi
Check eurocarprts fir the price of a pump then you'll know how much to pay. My local indi charged me around 170 for the pump plus an hours labour. I was led to believe there are two pumps available, different hose fittings only. Some folk swear the volvo pump is the only one to use but the pattern replacement I have had has been fine for two years. |

Firstly why are they recommending a new pump? If it is because of a minor leak I would check it carefully - I've known dealers condemn pumps that have a little bit of dampness on them that have done another 60k before the car was sold and the fluid never needed topping up. If it leaks to the extent that it needs the fluid topping up then yes it should be changed but if it has simply a damp patch on it - I would continue with it but monitor it every few thousand miles.
Secondly if you don't want the expense of the new Volvo part I would rather fit a second hand Volvo part than a reconditioned or pattern part. That's just my preference though, I've no experience of failures to back that up. Its not a difficult job but you do need to be able to remove the AUX belt.

I'll second that. My power steering pump has always had a damp patch but it still works perfectly (165k).

As Tannaton, there are mechanics that are 'quick' to say a small leak at the shaft seal means it's not good. Which is false.
Is the steering heavy or the pump makes noise? First step is to ensure is has the correct fluid which I believe is Pentosin although some early ones took transmission fluid (not sure). No such thing as refurbished pump: the bore that gives the pressure cannot be refurbished. Refurbished means two new seals (not really needed), a good cleaning so it looks like new, and a new pulley wheel.
