I would have alook at this site before you head ut again - http://www.whattowcar.com/

It comes out saying that you are not legally allowed to tow the vehicle!

It has the Elddis Scirrocco T/A and the 240GLE auto on the drop-down lists.

I would want a towcar that weighed over 2000kgs and had a much larger engine before I towed a caravan that weighed 1600kgs.

Seriously - phone your insurance company and ask them and also check with the caravan Club - I can't see any way that your 240 can safely tow that van.

The 85% is just a guide. I have towed my twin axle crusader with a 960 without any problems. The kerb weight was around 1750kgs I think the car was 1800 if i remember rightly. The most important think to remember is the nearer the limit you are the more important the loading is. It matters not about the kerb weight if the van is badly loaded. A light van badly loaded is worse than a heavy van well loaded. That said we no longer have the 960 but a v70 and this far to far away from the vans weight now so we tow with a RR.

Hi jon thankyou for your concerns, but the caravan I have is not actually listed on that site as the wieghts provided by the manufacturer for my van, state very clearly that the MTPLM is 1600kg and unladen it wieghs 1258kg.I can confirm that these figures are also stamped on the van chassis.
As for the 245GLE? not quite sure about that as my owners manual is very clear and states that I can legally tow 1600kg at 45mph and 1400kg at 50mph,I have looked at older manuals for earlier cars and found the figures do vary, but mine is a "J" reg 240SE estate auto,my owners manual I had to show to the dealer before he would allow me to buy the caravan.his matching software couldn't actually list my car only older models.
I will scan the relevant page so all can see it when I get chance.
As for the figures quoted on that site I just laughed out loud.I didn't have to get up speed to go up m/way hills and it quite happily changed into fourth,in fact I had difficulty trying to stay at 50mph as it kept creeping up.

I have managed to buy another swaybar and hope to fit it soon, having twin swaybars can only help with crosswinds and large lorries overtaking me.

Thankyou for warning me though as I could have easily got it wrong.
regards Brian.

yer braver than me..but good luck. in a word ok unladen but load near your kerb or past and you put you life quite on the line so much so if you told me the cars 1450 the vans loaded 1400+ you would be going on your own. no vans worth your life's
