Question Automatic or Manual?

What does your Volvo have?

I imagine that the majority of people will say the latter, as that is still the most common transmission choice in the UK to this date.

Yes, I love manuals for feeling connected to the car and being "in control", but automatics are fantastic for just throwing it in Drive and letting it do all the work.

Also, it can make a lot of people safer drivers as an automatic can shift up and down gears whilst going around bends for example - without having to think about it or move both hands off the wheel, when manuals would have to be manually shifted whilst turning the steering wheel.

The bottom line is, I would love to own both in an ideal world, but if I had a choice to buy an auto or manual - it would have to be the auto. Not because I am an incompetent driver, but because for the majority of the time I just want to get in the car and go. And if I can go from 0-60 without lifting my foot off the accelerator or touching the shifter then I'm happy.

I'm waiting for cars to catch up with trucks, our Merc Axors at work have a 12 speed box which can run in fully automatic, fully manual or best of both worlds fully auto with manual override.

Both Volvo's I've had have been manuals. I did not go out with a manual gearbox as a requirement it's just what was there at the time.

The 8 speed auto combined with a D4 in an S60 looks interesting but I'm not sure what my next car is going to be.
I do not need a family car as my wife drives that.
I do not do enough miles now to justify a diesel although I do prefer diesel engine characteristics.

I suspect my next car will be an automatic. I'm not sure what it will be mated to, petrol hybrid or straight petrol V8 look more likely than a diesel.

To be fair Volvo's aren't drivers cars - what is this"connected"nonsense? I prefer autos in Volvos; Volvo's are well suited to them.

First car I owned had an autobox, it sucked balls so much I converted the car to a manual. An auto tends to be slower than the manual equivalent, and they consume more petrol. (Maybe some new ones are different)

Autotragics cannot be towed very far either without screwing them up.

In the past it is true that auto's sapped a lot of power , used more fuel and were relatively slow. Things have changed a lot ,I can easily outrun a friends S90 with my V90 on acceleration not sure about top speed, mpg is about the same.
