Just to add to the general knowledge.
The wheel bearing bolts came out ok, much easier than expected.
But the bearing wouldn't come off. I beat 7 bells out of it with a hammer / cold chisel, but nothing.
So I took a step back and thought about. The top bolt which holds the disc baffle plate on almost lines up with a wheel bolt hole. I held the square end of a half inch drive extension bar against this bolt. Wound a wheel bolt through and tightened it: a lot.
It started to push the bearing off. Enough to hammer the cold chisel in behind it and force it out. Worked a treat.
Maybe this will help someone else in future.

New bearing on today and it's a different car!
Quieter at all speeds.
So, if you have a noise which is speed, rather than engine related, try your bearings. Mine didn't have the usual symptoms, just passed its MOT and seemed fine, except for a loud droning at certain speeds.

Problem is: I can hear the Mrs talking now!

The point is that wheel bearings have play when they are worn.... they make a noise when they are dry... sometimes the two come together....

Fairly easy. I knew the noise was at the front, but from my perspective it could have been anywhere. However, from a front passenger perspective it was very definitely to their right. So, I replaced front OS.

I'm doing the same job on my XC90 this weekend as well.
In my case I struggled to release the 4 retaining bolts behind the hub bearing as they were well and truly Loctited in, but I was lucky in that with quite a few solid whacks from all directions with a lump hammer, both side's hub bearings came off relatively easily.
I decided to replace both hubs and bearings as a unit - I believe you can get just the bearings and press them in as an option? - so preserving the old hubs wasn't a concern for me. The left hand side drive shaft took more persuasion to drift it back out of the knuckle, but it came out in the end. I used the ratchet end of a fat wobble bar inside the hub against the driveshaft and the socket end facing the hammer. Lots of copper grease on each driveshaft end now, ready for reassembly.
Now I'm trying to remove the control arm bushes...
