You need to get a printout of the service actions for your vehicle from the Volvo dealer.
Mine is attached on this link.
https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showp...54&postcount=4
This tells me that my EGR valve is covered for five years from purchase, irrespective of any warranty. Yours is probably just within the five year period, so I would be looking very closely at the codes for the replacement part on your invoice. If it matches mine, and your 'service action' printout is similar, the dealer has some questions to answer..

More or less, looks like the cleaned EGR cooler but didn't replace. Was essentially new valve and £300 quid labour....& £135 vat...

Bill was:

'DTC P140700 LOGGED AGAIN WITH NO AIR FLOW THROUGH EGR ETECTED QUICK INSPECTION AND ACTIVATION OF EGR SHOWS LARGE AMOUNT OF CARBON BUILD UP AND VALVE STICKING - ADVISE A FULL STRIP DOWN OF EGR FOR FULL INSPECTION ALSO ADVISE CUSTOMER EGR & POTENTIOMETER REPLACEMENT MAY BE NECESSARY

SMOKE TESTED NO AIR LEAKINGS DETECTED AIR BOX AND BATTERY + HOUSING REMOVED INC INTAKE PIPES - EGR VALVE & COOLER REMOVED EGR VALVE REPLACED REINSTALLED ALL COMPONANTS CLEANED DTCS RESET EGR VALUES ROAD TESTED RECHECK FAULTS NO FAULTS FOUND'

Thanks

They have had EGR cooling since 2001on the 5 cylinder diesels which worked faultlessly , only the new 4 cylinder engines from 2015 have the sensitive ones .

Hi, without wishing to sound silly, how would I be able to check whether 5 cyl or 4?
Thanks

It is a 5 cylinder , the older generation which rarely gave any EGR problems and the EGR valve is very robust ..

The egr parts do take a while to get out , If you have the same problem and same code they really need to fix this free of charge .

Code P140700 does indicate EGR Valve problems so what they have done is probably legitimate ..

you are unlikely to get any goodwill as the servicing has not been done at the dealer network I guess , it should be coming up to it's 4th service soon .

Hi, thanks for the reply. It had it's 4th service at around the time the light first appeared (about 2 days before it was booked in). Whilst it hasn't been serviced at my local Volvo dealer, it does have full service history with Volvo.

I don't really have a complaint with garage but just frustrated it's costing so much when there appears to be a potential design problem with the egr. Have emailed Volvo UK, so we'll see...not expecting much though!

Had other diesels of other marques for 25 years and never spent so much on a car of this mileage/age..

Will see how I get on next week..! (££££!)

Thanks again

If it has full history with Volvo do you know if they tried to get goodwill from Volvo ?

There is no design problem at all with your car , All the egr problems on here are for the later 4 cylinder engine ...

let us know how it goes ..
