Default BW35 compatibility?

Hello,

When I bought my replacement B18 engine a few years ago, it came with a BW35 autobox. As the autobox in Magnus is getting noisy I was about to take the spare to a local specialist to have it assessed and see what it needs to make it good (I'm guessing 5 years of storage won't have helped its cause). Then I remembered that the unit had come from a 144, not an Amazon; and this rang a bell that the 140s had a different adapter plate from engine to box. Is this correct, or is it the 240s that I'm thinking of? Should the 144 box be a straight swap for the one that's on the car?

Thanks.

Direct swap woodman. Only once I noticed a different size at flange out of gearbox. Flush the oil and let it be a good day. Regards, Kay

Default autobox

Hi Andy,

I seem to recall you bought the 140 engine and autobox removed from the same car. Your Amazon existing engine was shot. You have fitted the 140 engine to your Amazon autobox. Therefore you will be re-mating the 140 engine with the original autobox.
As already suggested, I would change the oil and fingers crossed!!

best wishes,
Chris.

Yes I suppose that's kind of obvious when you put it that way, Chris, thanks! I seemed to think there was something about the angle of the adapter, and in my mind we could have married the 140 engine to the Amazon box without realising that the 140 box was differently aligned.

'Change the oil and cross fingers' is a good strategy except that the existing box is working fine, it's just making lots of noise and getting gradually noisier; so I don't want to go to the trouble of swapping the box only to find I've fitted one that's in similar or worse condition. I'm only going to do it if I'm fitting a good one. So I'd like to get it assessed. I hear that this guy in Barnsley is good at such things: http://www.autotransmissions.co.uk/

Default Beware the change

Autobox off an early column change auto 144 is the same. Later floor shift ones have a shorter extension at the rear and may lack the attachment point for a right hand drive column shift.

Some 140 BW35 have fittings for an oil cooler. Useful if towing but can be blanked off.

You can't just blank the fittings off, you need to either loop them together, or remove the pipe inside the box that is the converter outlet from the pump to the front cooler fitting.

Hello Mark, thank you for your input.

I have totaly forgotten the later style, the floor shifter one. Thanks.

I will soon be bringing my BW35 back to life after 8 years sitting. Advice from my local classic gearbox specialist is to drive car and see what happens! GULP.

I look forward to hearing how your box is after hibernation.
