just normal really , just what you would expect .. now you can see why volvo say that by 2020 volvo plan that nobody will be killed or seriously injured in one of their cars ..

Might have looked even better afterwards had the windscreen been bonded in place properly !!

(I am of course joking)

An opportunity to remind us that no one (i.e. zero people) have been killed in the UK in an XC90 - not since it's launch in 2003. Not as a driver or passenger. I would guess in a P3 XC70 it's probably single figures....

How many have been killed by them though?

Making a car far stronger "than the competition" will result in more deaths on the road, not the result that many people will be happy with?

I know this may sound like a silly thing to say, but as someone who cannot afford one of these cars, I can only live in fear of being hit by one, especially when the driver thinks he is immortal.

I am not sure that is completely true. For you to survive not only does the passenger compartment have to not deform but the rest of the car has to take away the energy in a controlled manner, other wise the G forces are to high and you die anyway. So the fact that it absorbs energy in a control manner should help the other object you hit. Although people say Volvo's are built like tanks in fact they are not because I bet a tank doesn't have crumpled zones.

When you think about it, what's more impressive is that it wasn't a full frontal impact but a blow to just one corner. I know the car could pivot away in the collision but that's a lot of energy to expect one corner to dissipate.

I don't have any info to back this up, but I'm fairly sure Volvo design the front of their cars to be as pedestrian/cyclist friendly as possible, e.g. flexible bumbers, low front-end height, aluminium bonnet (unfortunately the trend is shifting back towards high front ends now). As for other car users, they're not necessarily heavier than similar sizes cars, just better designed and using high-tensile strength metal (e.g. the side impact protection on the doors of a V70/XC70 are very tough).

Yes, this is sometimes the risk when a driver feels too safe, but in my view people who drive bigs cars unsafely (fast and/or on the wrong side of the road) are just bullies who haven't grown up...so they'll behave like that in any car (especially Audi Q7s and Range Rover Discovery Sport !!)

There is no doubt that the passenger area is stronger than just about everything else as made of boron steel but the ends of the car are soft they deform …
