Difference between 2.0D, D3, D4?

Hi all,

I suspect this has been asked before but what is the physical difference between these engines? I have the 2.0d (136hp) but I see D3 D4 and D5 on various different V50's I see driving around. I know the D5 is the more powerful version but the performance differences between the 2.0d and D3 seem very similar? If anyone could share some light on this it would be much appreciated.

Same engine, just different states of tune. Ranging from 138, 150, 182 and 202 bhp or there abouts.

If we are soley talking Volvo S40/V50/C30/C70 then:

2.0d is a 2.0-litre 4 cylinder Peugeot/Ford engine.

D3 is a 2.0-litre 5 cylinder Volvo engine (150bhp)
D4 is a 2.0-litre 5 cylinder Volvo engine (177hp)
D5 is a 2.4-litre 5 cylinder Volvo engine (180bhp)

Basically, if you are buying a diesel Volvo S40/V50/C30/C70, you want to avoid the 2.0d and get a proper Volvo engine.

D5 is an older engine, some prefer the D4 as it's a bit more modern in the way it delivers power.

In the most recent Volvos, D2/3/4 etc is the same engine (2.0-litre 4 cylinder VOLVO engine (new design), but in different power outputs.

That'a brill. I thought they were all 4 pots with the diesels! Well you learn something new every day. The d3 and 2.0d seem to have similar performance but I imagine the d3 is a much smoother engine?

5 cylinder engines are smoother in power delivery due to overlapping ignitions per rotation of the crank.

True to above, but 5pots are also known for being notoriously unbalanced due to its nature aswell. Same goes to 3cyl engines, or atleast tyhe older ones I know of.

well the volvo petrol ones are dead smooth and no balance shaft . you could balance a coin on the cam cover when idling same as the 6 cyl BMW adverts from the 80's :-)

seriously? I always had slight odd vibration in range 2000-2200 rpm and lots of US folks were confirming the same, argumenting "its normal as its 5cyl..."
should it not be there?
