Default P0244

I have recently had an issue when accelerating hard, the car goes into limp mode, on the dash it says engine service required and am getting code P0244 Turbocharger Wastegate Solenoid A Range/Performance
any ideas what this could be?

The XC90 does not have a wastegate. That is a generic OBD code. Get the codes read with VIDA to help you find the cause.
If I had to guess I would suspect sticky (coked up) turbo inlet guide vanes. If that is the case you will need to remove and clean/replace the turbo. An in-place clean MAY give you some temporary improvement.

Would an engine carbon clean have any effect?

Yes, if it is a thorough inlet and exhaust clean

The "magic in a spray can" won't do the trick.
You need proper solvents and machines that inject the solvent

But nothing beats disassembly and through cleaning off the vehicle,

I've just been down this road with this P2044 code.
Are you getting limp mode when trying to push on at around 65+, especially with a load on? Mine did this but then started to sound very gassy at lower speeds, started getting complaints when pulling away in 2/3 rd gear, sometimes needing a restart to reboot sometimes doing it by itself.

Tried products like Forte turbo cleaner (which seemed to work for 200 miles, but probably coincidence) turbo revive (spray into air intake and rev) as well, no effect.

There's no way to check the vanes for dirt without removing the turbo but in my case I'd tried everything else so refurbed turbo went in. now its fine, thank heavens! Good luck.

Ok thanks, I get limp mode when accelerating hard regardless of speed, if my revs stay high for over a certain length of time then it happens
