Default Rubbing/squeaking from the front (?). I'm stumped.

Dear all, unfortunately this is one of those "it's making a funny noise" threads.

I get a rotational rubbing/squeaking noise from what sounds like the front. As soon as I set off it starts chirupping away as if something is rubbing on rotation. It gets quicker as I increase speed but either it's drowned out by other noise or it disappears at about 2k revs. It seems to quiet down/disappear as I lift off the throttle or brake.

I can't replicate it by revving the engine while stationary and it's not bearings or brakes binding because I've had all 4 wheels off the ground and they spin as freely and quietly as car with 150k miles on should.

I'm a bit stumped. Any thoughts?

Sounds like a lazy caliper or sliding pins to me (if applicable), maybe some grease on the back of the pads and check everything is smoothly moving brakes wise?

Sounds like it could be to me. Easiest way to check is to go for a short drive and when you get back, go round each wheel in turn and feel for heat at the hub. Be careful not to burn yourself as if it is a lazy calliper they do get hot.

Which engine is this ? Manual transmission ?
I would look first at the power steering reservoir fluid level and even color - should be a sort of green. May also be a pulley chirping but it depends on the actual noise

The description describes more of a wheel rotational noise rather than an engine rotational noise. Says as soon as he sets off which dosent sound engine related.

I have had the same (or very similar) noise occur twice on my S60. Both times the noise lasted all day but was gone the next day. A period of about 6 months separated both occurances. It sounds like rubber squeaking at a frequency of once per wheel revolution. When the car was jacked up and the wheel rotated there was a quiet squeaking noise coming from what appeared to be the outer driveshaft boot. The noise is a lot louder with the wheel on the ground, so I suspect the source is not the driveshaft boot. The next port of call will be to check the OSF driveshaft support bearing.

Interestingly the noise also only occurs when driving forward, and braking doesn't stop the noise or make it any worse. The front braking system is relatively new and everything is as it should be. I am convinced it's driveline related. When time permits I'll get a good look at it and report back.

Other things to check could be a brake shield?

I've also had a split nearside ABS ring on my V70 which made a rotational squeak that was much worse on right turns. Didn't figure that one out until I happened to spot that the surface of the ring was a bit shinier than the one on the other side, as it had been rubbing on the inner surface of the hub due to rust underneath the ring pushing it out.

Calipers or pins was one of my thoughts but as I said, I've had the car up in the air and all wheels spin freely. I will examine them a little more closely though.

Sorry, should have said. Automatic. I'm part way through some gentle drain and fills but that seems to be having no effect.

I changed the PAS fluid last week and it made no difference. Aux belt and tensioner changed last week too. Also no difference. I think if it was a pulley I'd be able to replicate it when stationary.

Again. Car in the air and it's quiet.

I should say that I'm doing all these maintenance bits and bobs because they need doing. I would have been nice if one of them solved the noise! As I said, stumped!
