Steering Rack issues
I'm after abit of help new to volvo. I currently have a 2001 v70 T5 Manual, I recently had a reconditioned rack and the tracking is miles out the rack fits well, everything looks right but the main issue is even with the track rods adjusted allthe way in the O/s is still toe in. I ordered the diffrent inner rack ends as these can be diffrent depending on rack, this helped alittle and I modified it to be even shorter, but best I can get with steering wheel straight is about 2-3 degree toe in. Still can't adjust the o/s enough. Iv bein told by the refurb company 1 in every hundred they do is diffrent internally and they can't get any. Is there anyway round this? Dose anyone know where I can get this diffrent rack?
Iv Read there's difference between the smi and zf racks but people managed with swapping the inner rack ends which Dosent appear to help me with this rack. Any help or advise appreciated. I'm reluctant to buy genuine volvo at around £700 I don't have the money and only paid a grand for the car |

You should have the SMI rack. SMI has the shortest outer tie rods. The ZF from 2004 on had longer tire rods, and the XC70 had even longer ones.

I would be speaking to the supplier of the rack.
If they have supplied you with the correct rack, the correct inner rods should fit perfectly. Given they don't fit, the supplier should provide a replacement rack rather than you having to find dubious workarounds.

The supplier has said they don't have the correct one and the one I need is rare. I just want to confirm this with people who actually know these cars and if anyone else has had these issues. I want to try and order the correct one. But since the rack remanufacture is telling me it's rare idk if I can trust ordering from another supplier and it end up being wrong again.
Is there anydiffence in between the smi racks before 2004? Or should any smi rack fit and another supplier could actually fit? |

The same rack may be fitted to others but trying to work out all of the alternative possibilities fitted to other models could create more confusion.

Iv checked the part number on the old rack the new reconditioned rack and another rack from another supplier, all of them have the same part number but there is a stamping of 1:1:1 on the old original rack and 1:1:2 on the new racks which is confirming the 1 in a hundred rack which has diffrent internals that the recon guy told me about. All racks are smi. Anyone know where I may be able get hold of one of these racks or anyone else had this issue? .
I have tried a part number from volvo but unable to find any of these on the Web and aftermarket supplier Dosent Cross reference the number. |
