Need competent welder/fabricator in Manchester-ish
Hi folks,
Apologies for posting this in your section but I know lots of people only read the model specific sections and you guys with more valuable classics than my well used 240 are more likely to have knowledge of people in the rust fixing trade perhaps.. MOT time again and unfortunately my tame welders (the ones that did an amazing job on my rear arch restoration a few years ago for those of you with long memories) are no longer in business. A combination of circumstances outside of my control has led this to get to the point of cutting it fine in terms of MOT expiry in a week. I don't need the car desperately fixed by then but it will be a lot harder to drive round and get quotes etc so it makes sense to move fast and at least get it booked in. I need full outer sill replacement (replacement panel is available) and a couple of minor bits of fabrication doing. After a number of historic bodges on the car I want the job doing properly by someone who knows what they are doing and has pride in their work, however at the same time I want to pay a realistic cost for the work involved. I basically just need someone competent and honest. Any recommendations for someone within 50 miles or so drive of Greater Manchester gratefully received. Thanks! |

1. Pay much more than you want to for a jobsworth to weld it.
2. Make friends with a welder.* 3. Buy a MIG and learn how to use it. * If No.2 unavailable go to 3.

try autofusion in wigan/leigh area, superb welders and have a passion for older cars, or dickinson restorations who again is leigh area but is a mobile welder who used to work for coleman milne
autofusion did my cortina arches and chris dickinson did my amazon, the price of replacement panels being as high as they are its worth paying to get them fitted properly ,and then its done Autofusion UK Car Body Shop Address: 10 Newlands Rd, Leigh, Wigan WN7 4HN Phone:07938 041273 http://www.dickinsonsrestorations.co.uk Last edited by bobthebarge; Nov 21st, 2014 at 08:20. |

I now have a quote from a classic car restorer pretty locally in Gtr Manchester who clearly knows his stuff but I will have a chat with Chris Dickinson also before booking in, always helps to have a second opinion. Advice much appreciated, thank you! Last edited by rusty244; Nov 21st, 2014 at 15:18. |

my cortina was the white mk2 estate , it would be a shame if autofusion have given up , they did move into the bigger unit further down, i will give em a ring and find out
the good thing about dickinson is that he will do it where you live , and you can do as little or as much of the labouring that you fancy ,he isnt the cheapest , but he supplies all the gear and doesnt stop for dinner etc and he is a good fabricator |
