I'm going to chime in with not buying German stuff, as once they get to the age where they start needing repairs their values plummet, I know, I have been there a number of times. Unfortunately Volvos seem to be going the same way also. :-(

In absolute terms, if I am being honest, I think that the Boxster's the better car*, but the 911 is more of an experience. I started the engine and knew I had to buy it...

*at least in the era when I was running them, early/mid 2000s

I'll stick in my £0.02.

Peugeot 306 convertible, especially the Roadster with the hardtop, iconic of the 90's. They look fantastic in the solid bright yellow.

Same car underneath: Citroen ZX. So much more advanced than the contemporary Escort, reliable and no rust issues, but rare these days - I heard that the passive steering rubber bushings on the rear subframe are known to give out expensively. More of the Volcane & 16v might have been worth saving than of the everyday models, they must be going up in value again by now.

Mercedes R129s are good value. Boxsters are cheap, I've never liked them.

Jon.
I would agree early boxsters feel relatively cheap, not special inside, but so tactile to drive. The 350/370 comparison comes up a lot, 350 feels more old school, and I must say that word again, cheap. I love the 370 looks but happily admit that's a very personal thing. Good rx8 must start appreciating or they will end up being free!! Another wonderfully flawed, wonderfully intuitive car to drive. We own a ratty old z3 which I adore, these will surely rise in value also.

Z3 mmmmmade in the USA, the only one worth having is the M Roadster, or at least the 3.0 litre.

RX8s are so cheap they're in the ownership of people who can't afford to run them properly so good one's are hard to find.

Ours is wee 1.9 16v, owned five years now, like it lots. Six pots go very well but feel bit weightier in the nose, but yeah, I'd love a 2.8 or 3.0. The wee engined one is quick enough and deserves a better home than it has😡

I must have driven some right old tat as I never really subscribed to that opinion (I did spec mine with soft leatherx extended leather plus nicer gearsticks I must admit). Perhaps I was all overcome with the I've got a Porsche lark - I'd probably accept that charge for my first, a 986 2.7 with no a/c and a Boxster Red interior, mind

I will qualify that by saying I never drove a new one, only used examples at the affordable end of the market!! I ran a 928 s4 for a while, that always had a sense of occasion.

I'll stay loyal to my 500E, no-one knows what it is, that's my kind of car.
