b230et
A b230et shouldn't have a catalytic converter. Do they even have a lambda sensor?

Correct - no cat or lambda on B230ET. Lambdas 1st started on B230FT followed soon after by catalysts.

B230FK... downside to having many Volvos and rushing XD Lambda sensor was a nightmare! why do they put them down there? :P I know the cable shroud had melted, but the cables themselves where hard and brittle and completely melted away and shorted out at the base of the sensor, don't buy cheap sensors! took a while to swap, couldn't see the top of the drive for the snow storm! but it made the world of difference, starts normally instead of acting like its running on 2 cylinders, hopefully Friday the new crank position sensor fuel filter and water pump gasket arrives and all should be good again! well good apart from the buggered exhaust

Chances are if the Lambda had shorted out it was over-fueling, it would mean 0V out so telling the ECU it was incredibly lean so the ECU would add fuel, hence the cloud of black smoke. Also when it first shorted out, it probably pulled the +12v feed to the heater in the sensor down to earth until the wire melted a bit more - that would have shorted your +12v ignition feed to the coil and resulted in no spark for a few seconds then when the wires melted more and disconnected, spark would be restored and the hot exhaust gases would ignite all the unburnt (but vapourised) fuel in the cat - KA-BOOM!!!

Tried to go on a test run and the car died after 500 meters. engine would rev but as soon as I tried to move there wasn't enough power to move, then randomly out of the blue all the power came back.... my new crank sensor arrived while I was out on a test drive, had a look where its located to find coolant all over the bell housing. I had a leaking water pump gasket so I didn't check for any other water leaks, hose to the heater has a small split and has been spilling coolant onto the crank sensor for at least 2 weeks! swapping hoses and crank sensor today, hopefully it will sort it all out!
