Default 240 Est problems

Hi, I recently developed a few of problems with my 240 2.0 1993 Auto est.
I seem to have a leak of oil from somewhere on the gearbox, when im driving on the motorway the oil is dripping onto the exhaust causing a burning smell, ive parked the car over some cardboard but cant find any drips, it just seems to be when the car is travelling underload.

Also when I pull away I get a vibrating coming underneath, it feels like the prop shaft area, ive changed the mount at the gearbox and this has made the problem slightly better but has not cured it completely.

I also have a problem with the rear window wash/wipe, the intermittent cycle works, but erratically, it never completes a full cycle, the constant cycle works but never zeros itself back to the starting position. I also have a problem with the intermittent cycle on my front wipers, they used to work then all of a sudden stopped.

Finally my hooter doesnt work, this has never worked.

Any ideas?

As usual, any help greatly appreciated.

Barry

Barry,

Is is possible that the actual leak is not from the gearbox but from the flow/return pipes for the transmission fluid to the radiator?

I had this on my old 240 once. The fluid was dripping down on to the hot exhaust and there was even smoke coming from under the bonnet.
The horn - is the fuse OK? If it is OK, try to remove the horn and clean up the contact points to get a better earth. Good horns are ten a penny at the breakers.
The wiper cycles - this could need an examination of the motors and switch contacts to ensure that there is no build up of contamination that is causing the cycle to overrun/underrun.

Hi Barry ,
Your gearbox/oil leak/vibration problem is the plain white metal bearing in the gearbox tail housing worn out . The parts needed are :- bearing , gasket , and seal , its not a big job but get it done before the gearbox gets wrecked ! Tony Barrett 0208 741-7500/3300
