Default Intermittant mileage trip

A strange phenomina in my round-speedo 164 has decided to occur again. I experienced it a couple of years ago so took the speedo out of the unit and "fiddled" with some nylon cogs (I'm rubbish at taking fiddly things apart so didn't), and it worked again.
However, today it didn't work again, although the speedo has always been fine, but as I reversed out of a driveway I could hear some faint clicking in the unit, after which it was reading again.
I can only assume something is only meshing if the teeth are favourably aligned, and if they come out of mesh can only be engaged again by reversing a couple of yards so that the cable turns a worm or something back into engagement.

Has anybody else experienced this and cured it without the need for brain-surgeons fingers. I don't want to merely fit another speedo as I want to keep as much as possible on the car original.

I have not come across this problem, but I suspect the nylon gears are worn and would need to be replaced.

Before going that far, it would be worth disconnecting both ends of the speedo cable and ensuring it turns smoothly both ways, and then refitting carefully to ensure full engagement at both ends.
