Default wd40 on manifold studs

Just a quick question, I have been spraying manifold studs with WD40 at night on a cold engine until my friend can have a go at changing the intake gasket.

Today I started it and a lot of smoke is coming of the manifold, is it safe to drive it ?

The smoke is probably coming from the WD burning off. Suggest run the engine with the bonnet open for about five or ten minutes, or until the smoke ceases. It will do the same if you elect to drive the car but I'd go for the first option, that way you can see what's happening and it will give you peace of mind.

If you are using the WD40 to free the studs Duck oil is a far better penetrating oil.
It will still smoke on start up as the oil burns off but I have found nothing finer for freeing siezed threads even in a salt laden coastal environment.

Water Disspersent (sp) 40, its not a penetrating oil. Those mentioned above are.

Tho my prefered is PB-Blaster which I found mentioned on a yank site. 50:50 mix of Acetone & ATF. Not failed me..........yet!

Its all rubbish compared to volvo's own Rapid Rust Loosener

Part number 1161658 about £6 for an aerosol ,
It is slightly acidic and really does make the difference , I discovered it about 20 years ago i happily pay £6 a can as it is worth it .

Didn't know Volvo had their own stuff, guess its made by one of the usual suspects though?

Plus gas as a liquid, and double TT as an aerosol are both readily available and very good, or diesel if you want to emerse something completely, can take days for it to work, but it will work, or at least free it as much as is chemically possible.

Just use paraffin as a rust lubricant, cheaper that all these tins and just as effective . The more refined the paraffin the brewer the penetration.

Thanks for the tip on the Volvo stuff.

I have always used Plusgas and found that to be the best.

WD40 is good at lubing lightly and cleaning. Also good for taking off tar spots.

I am surprised Volvo make their own penetrating fluid, makes 2 snapped bleed nipples on the rear calipers even more inexcusable from master technicians.
We snap the nipples off then you pay £105 a caliper for us to fix it and by the way the pipe unions are made of cheese so a good chance we will have to replace the pipes as well @ £75 an hour. Only took it in for the fixed price flexible pipe change and reportedly the rear ones did not need doing despite being 11 years old. Now I am told they had the best freeing spray in the univers, and did not use it.
