Squeal
2006 XC70 D5.
On full lock manoeuvring/parking the car has developed a strange noise. Its the sort of noise made if there is a small stone or chipping trapped between the disk and the back plate. Its a sort of chaffing/ squeal. It only does it on full lock. I have had both front wheels off and inspected for any debris trapped between the disk and back plate. Nothing found, I took the opportunity to replace the Pads so checked for anything trapped around or in the callipers, again nothing found. Its driving my good lady nuts and me as I can not think what else it could be. Any suggestions greatly received as always. |

Replace the auxiliary belt ! ! ! ! ! As you reach full lock , the pressure in the steering rack rises , the pump struggles to turn & the belt slips on the pulleys & you get a squeal
IF the belt snaps , you can pretty much kiss goodbye to the top of your engine as the aux belt has a tendency to wrap itself around the cambelt , breaking that and wreaking the cylinder head Belts are CHEAP , engines less so . To confirm , open the bonnet and with the engine running shine a torch on the pump pulley , get the boss to apply full lock & see if you can see the belt slip / pulley stop turning

Tyres rubbing the inner wing?
Pressure relief valve in the power steering system?

Just to keep you up to speed as I know how frustrating it is when a thread dries up.
I have ordered the aux belt kit but due to Xmas and a house move I just have not had time to change out. What I should have explained originally is that the noise is only on right hand lock, not necessarily full lock. The noise is consistent with road wheel speed. Its not constant. Its as if something is warped and catching at a certain point each revaluation. It is not the sort of noise I would expect from a slipping belt. I would expect a constant noise. I will of course keep you posted when I change the belt as to weather it has cured the noise or not. This wont be for three weeks or more as I am back at work but in the mean time any more thoughts would be appreciated. |

Have you checked the metal tyre rubbing plate inside the front of the nearside wheel arch?
Mine rubs here at or near full right lock but only with some tyres. Have you checked the plastic bits on the lock limiters. They wear or fall off and can let one side rub and not the other. The limiters can be taken off and swapped over for a second bite on the unworn part. |

Well I finally got to the bottom of the issue. Bit embarrassing really, took the car to my local trusted specialist for a soot filter regeneration as the message had come up and I had tried a good old thrash to no avail. Asked them to check out the noise which was obvious in the car park. It turned out to be the disc guard too close to the disc. Tech moved it slightly and no more noise. I checked all round there originally when we first heard the noise but not being sure what the clearance should be and the noise not being evident with the wheel off it seemed OK to me. Any way, happy days.
