Default engine mounts, is there an easy way to check...

Hi all,

My V70 has always felt a bit rough under power, and now I've repaired the clonking suspension, I can occasionally hear a slight 'clunk' on moving off and stopping that doesn't feel as if it's on the drive train.

Have been wondering if I have a failed/tired mount or mounts and want to know if there is an easy way to tell. As the pneumatic mounts are pricey, I don't want to guess and be wrong.

I have the motorboating sound with the oil filler off, but it doesn't clear when I block the pipes from the pump thingy.

I don't have a mityvac to test vacuum and looking at the prices am unlikely to get one for a one off test.

The car runs well, possibly a little down on power at low rpm, and has no codes relating to the engine (AQS and alarm only)

Cheers for any advice.

You don't need a Mityvac, just a dirt cheap vacuum tester kit which are often under a tenner.
You can also test your whole vacuum system along with many other uses.

For vacuum components, there's really no alternative to a vacuum tester other than guesswork.

Ok, you talked me into it! I can cope with 12 quid that I just paid!

Wise move.
There's engine mount and vacuum testing videos on my YouTube channel. You'll also notice that I only use a cheap tester too and it's been excellent.

Took me a while - the first vacuum gauge I bought got lost in the post....

Anyway, just checked.

Front mount is completely cream crackered, doesn't build vacuum.
Rear mount, only tested from the pipe at the tee-piece, builds vacuum but leaks it away.

Assuming nothing too drastic at the MOT on Tuesday, I'll order new mounts.

Cheers guys.

There's a buying guide/comparison video on my YouTube channel too.
There's no need to overspend to maintain quality.

Thanks Chesh - is there anything you haven't done on these cars? :-)

Oh lots I've not done but I've now done most jobs the average owner comes across..... With reasonable maintenance though, I'll hopefully avoid major things like any kind of engine disassembly.
I've never fancied that.
