The one solenoid on the drivers door makes a noise locking and unlocking.
No second noise. Alarm light stays flashing whatever. Turning the key in the door makes the locking button go up and down. Interior light goes on and off with key or fob. Petrol flap didn’t lock before anyway. Yellow button has no effect. |

So if the alarm light stays flashing then it’s because the car still thinks the alarm is on. The second noise would be the deadlocks coming on, which would give hope to the chances of success after breaking a window. The key in the door should override everything and force the door open. I’ve never seen inside a Volvo one but I’m going to assume it has freewheeling locks (to stop a screwdriver or other blunt force make the barrel go round). Which means that if the locking button does indeed go up and down then the barrel mechanism must still be working, and it is, as you say, the deadlocks holding the door shut. So, if the alarm light never goes out and the door won’t physically release the deadlocks, I’m going to guess at water getting into the CEM and corrupting the release signal, but that’s totally a guess at this stage. The fact that the yellow button doesn’t do anything doesn’t tell you definitively if the car battery is charged. I would suggest it’s a whole lot more pleasant a clean up if you can force the bonnet open (pull out the grill and fish about from there would my starting point but I’ve never had to do it on my Volvo.) compared to breaking a window. Then you can charge the car battery, and possibly aim some heat at the CEM and potentially dry what ‘might’ be wet. That’s where I’d start anyway... |

The drivers keylock is a pure mechanical device and works if the main car battery is dead. It will release the deadlock on that door if it's functioning correctly. I can only assume there is a rod or something that's failed in the door mechanism. Never been inside a volvo door, so don't know for sure.
Have you tried the passenger doors to see if one of those is releasing by any chance? |

That still worked when my CEM was dead (and the same CEM locks you out of opening both the windows and the doors from the inside... can you say "deathtrap"???)

Exactly, both the driver's door and the trunk lock (when present, such as in the S60) work and will open the door/trunk lid even if the car battery is disconnected. Quite common for the lock mechanism inside the door to fail - quite a few people mentioned this on forums. Unfortunately, one finds out about this only when the battery goes flat. Quote:

Had to eventually break window to get in. Put in key and car started straight up so not dead battery. However, no tacho, speedo, gear indicator, time, temperature, etc. on dash even though car runs and drives fine. Deadlocks all still locked (including boot) and alarm flashing light still flashing.
Off to Volvo specialist tomorrow to plug in. My concern is how to get door panel off of a shut door if the deadlock has physically seized. |
