Exclamation Faulty DIM

Had following message - SRS-air bag - urgent service. Put car into local volvo dealer in Glasgow,Taggarts Volvo, and it cost me £138 for two hours work to be told that I would need a new DIM costing £800 plus VAT.
I wish I had found this forum beforehand and would have saved myself the agony and cash.
Told that air bag system still works despite fault message. Is this true?

Had thought about secondhand replacement but now unsure if it is the right thing to do. Maybe I should just live with the fault.

Any ideas guys!!!!

Sounds suspect to me, I can't see how a SRS fault requires replacement of the DIM.
I would need them to convince me with some hard technical evidence, for £138 it would expect a proper written report, including what fault codes were stored.
I'd take it to another dealer if you don't get any joy, complain to Volvo HQ.

Thanks for your comments.
Should have mentioned I got report with the following codes
SRS00D4
DIM0003
DIM0005 and these comments:
Main connextion at DIm OK.
Checked under both fronts seats to check for chaffing as per TJ.
Found new DIM required.
I have same suspicions as you about Dealer and I do intend to contact Volvo.

New DIM my RRSE...

SRS00D4 Codes out for:

This Code is stored if the SRS module recieves a CAN signal indicating that the LED in the Combined Intrument Panel (DIM) is broken.

Source,

Damaged LED in DIM

Fault Symptoms

The SRS Indicator Lamp does not light when the ignition is switched on
General Warning Lamp Lit

---------------------------

DIM0003

The Code is stored if the DIM detects an internal open circuit in the circuit for the SRS Warning Lamp

---------------------------

DIM0005

Red General Warning Lamp does not light, The Code is stored if the DIM detects an internal open circuit in the circuit for the General Red Warning Lamp.

---------------------------

So an LED or two potentially going bad means a new DIM..... hmmm indeedy

However, the Dealer is correct, in that the instructions for repair say "Replace DIM"

DIM0005

Hmmm.

Seems a very expensive way to fix what is likely to be a couple of dry joints!

If you can't / don't want to DIY a word with a repairer such as http://www.bba-reman.com/
may be worth trying.

I've got very similar problems on my V70 on an '03 plate. If it has to be then I will get a new one but I've spoken to a few people that have said that it might be one of the power supply units of which there are 5 all over the car. After it happens I get codes:

SRS Airbag needs service - Urgent
and
025.

Do you have to have the drivers seat out to check the cables or can you see all of them with the seat as far back as possible. I can see a lot of them and they seem fine.

I've also had the DIM out to look for dry joints. Not sure I really know what I'm looking for but can't see anything obvious. Does anyone know where on the board the problem is likely to be - I assume its going to be a power supply problem?

Thanks for any advice.

Angry How to replace a DIM

Dear all,

Could anybody please tell me how to remove the DIM? Mine is doing exactly what everyone else's stated - Airbag urgent, works intermitently - took it to (Harratts) volvo to tell me it would cost £1000! I am an electrician by trade but not an auto electrician but willing to give it a go.

I am after any advice that any of you could give me. Plus, I haven't told the wife yet and I do not intend on doing - you do not understand how she will react!!!!!!!!

Cheers

Hi,

I was sat in the car today engine off listening to the radio out of the blue SRS urgent service required, reading the posts here I don't have any other probs with the dash and as for the warning lights - the srs symbol stays lit constantly but no warning triangle and I wasn't fiddling under my seat at the time!

I suppose I will have to take it to the dealer for the bad news!
