Volvo D5 engine
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Volvo D5 is a type of turbocharged diesel engine developed by Volvo Car Corporation for use in its passenger cars.

It is an all aluminium 5 cylinder engine with 20 valves and double overhead camshafts. It has a VNT turbocharger, common rail direct injection and cooled exhaust gas recirculation.

There are two generations of D5 engines. The first generation was introduced in 2001; the second generation was introduced in 2005. The second generation has a reduced compression ratio, a water cooled VNT turbocharger with a bigger compressor and an electric servo motor to adjust the vanes, an improved EGR system, a throttle valve, revised intake and exhaust ports and a newer generation of common-rail direct injection with improved injectors.

Volvo has a special version of the D5 for use in the S40, V50 and C70 models that produces 180 hp and 350 NM of torque. The engine compartments of these cars are smaller so the engine has a different intake manifold and other parts.

The D5 is also offered as a marine engine by Volvo Penta. The output is 110 hp (82 kW) at 3,000 rpm, 130 hp, 160hp, 190 hp (140 kW) at 4,000 rpm and it is coupled to a duoprop I/O system.

further information on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volvo_D5_engine and no doubt on the Volvo website and no doubt on here somewhere

I have recently been looking at the specs on this engine, whilst I am sure it has very fast acceleration, returns high mpg, is quiet and doesn't blow head gaskets compared to my old D24Tic non common rail engine I was surprised to see that the D5 has 163hp and max speed 127mph whereas my D24Tic has 122hp and I'm sure it's top speed is pretty close to 127mph. Everyone raves about the D5, I was expecting it to have a higher top speed
