I couldn't disagree more ;-) Sure you loose money when buying a new car, no news there...If you don't like it, don't buy it....

But let's not forget that nobody seems to put a value on having those goodies for the period you keep the vehicle...That's worth a lot to me...But even more so come resale, a well specced car is so much easier to sell than a basic level..It attracts more buyers. Not necessarily more cash, but a quicker sell is more cash in my book ;-)

PS. The best depreciation I had was on a Nissan Patrol...But true, buy it right...Absolute top spec for list -9k...Then over three years I sold it for 6k less then I bought it...Pretty good I would have said..

Our current Murano has been the worst, but then again I knew that when we bought it...That 3.5V6 Petrol is not popular with penny pinchers, but hey we had lots of power and a very quiet ride :-)

I find it quite amusing how we worry about the money we lose on our indulgences.

I drove a Subaru Impreza before the XC60 and got 20 to the gallon. I didnt give 2 hoots about the cost as the pleasure it brought me far out weighed the cost.

The XC60 is obviously a radical change for me but it has opened up a whole new world for me and my partner. I can now hear the stereo - and what a fantastic sound the high performance sound + sub has - I can actually park it any wahere without fear of it getting nicked and can now lug my mountain bikes around on rough tracks.

My main point is buy it use it enjoy it - stop worrying about the cost. Your a long time in a box. Which will cost you a fair wedge and you wont even get to enjoy that !!!

Yes totally agree. If you can afford it, do it.

Not sure I agree about the "more things to wrong" theory. If you thought like that you'd never be looking at a car like the xc60, which is packed full of gadgettry, anyway.

Funnily enough the leather and elec seats are the two main things attracting me to the se lux. Plus as someone has said, a top spec model will always attract more interest, so that means less hassle and also potentially more money for it.

Default packed with gadgetry

I must admit the fact they are packed with gadgetry does worry me but anything half decent from anyone else I similarly packed .BMW, Mercedes & Audi.

They are all having problems too ,software problems and electrical problems that leave people with expensive bills for electrical components once the thing is out of warranty.

We are moving into an era of very over complicated and expensive to repair second hand cars that could be a crippler for their owners. This could lead to a write down of the perceived value of second hand cars dropping badly because people will not want to be taking them on second hand.

Increasingly longer manufacturers warranties will have to be offered to sell them new .Its happening now in the USA and will come to the UK given time.

One only lives once. You're a long time dead and you can't take money and possessions with you.

Buying a new car is a lovely experience and is one of the things that reminds me why I work my knackers off at work - reward.

Depreciation (like the brown stuff) happens - but then you see a great example with my Mum who recently traded in her Micra - she got £2k for it when it was worth at best £750 (and it did not qualify for the scrappage allowance).

Depreciation only crystallises when you sell the car. Up to that point why worry? As long as I can afford to buy a new car I will and I will savour every purchase and not give a toss about depreciation.

Have to admit i have had new cars in the past, brand new company cars as well (just opted out of a company scheme as the cash equivalent makes it a better bet to run my own car). The pleasure i get is the fantastic savings on used cars (I now have a 51 plate V70 SE & a 51 plate 330ci BMW both with FSH and both in very good condition. Outlay less than 7k all in (my company allowance is 8k a year) so stick private plates on and enjoy the cash in your pocket.

Daleman .... Id be interested to know what you own/drive currently ? ..... and also be interested to follow up on your comment about longer warranties in the USA compared to UK ..... can you give some examples of which car makers offer longer warranties US compared to what they offer in the UK ..... I have a keen interest and follow the US car market quite closely and had not noticed this myself

Cheers

Default The USA is a lot more consumer orientated than over here in

There seems to be plenty of 4 and 5 year warranties plus loads of 100000 mile power train warranties .

Try this link for a full list.
