Default XC90 D5 fuel economy is impressive

Driven 313 miles [504kms] in the car today, about 200 of which were motorway at a fair old pace.

Average speed 55mph [88.5kms/hr]

Average fuel consumption an outstanding 41mpg [6.9l/100kms],

which is only 1mpg less than I would expect from the Honda CRV manual on the same journey at the same pace. I've driven the same route dozens of times.

From Fishponds, Bristol roundabout to Cardiff Gate services it did 43.5mpg in light traffic. From home to Cardiff Gate, exactly 100 miles to the yard, it achieved dead on the average figure of 41mpg at an average speed of 57mph.

Ten years ago a diesel car of this size and performance would struggle to better 26mpg at the pace I drove today. That's a massive increase in efficiency over that time. I know that my Land Cruiser 4.2 [only 200hp though], which I still run in its 20th year, would struggle to better 22mpg and would generally average 10 mph slower. 24 mpg would be possible if holding around 60mph maximum.

I'm very impressed with the Volvo's fuel economy, as you can probably tell.
It has covered 550 miles in total on this tank of fuel and just indicated the range was down to 50 miles.
I could get 600 miles from the Audi Q7, but its tank held 21 gallons not the Volvo's 15gallons.

That equates to the Audi doing 28mpg, which is about right. But more importantly for every two journeys of today's length, the Audi would use 6 gallons more fuel, or 27 litres @ £1.25/litre. That's £33 extra per tankful or every 600 miles. Or £16.50 more per day like today.

Of course a new Q7 today is far more economical than my old [long gone] 2007 model and might even give the XC90 a run for its money. I don't know and can only speak from personal experience.

That is good. Just imagine the numbers you could have achieved at 60-65 on the motorway.

I only do that speed when traffic or weather or other conditions make it the appropriate speed. But yes, 4 to 5 mpg better must be possible. For instance, I once got 50mpg on a similar distance from the Honda, but know that 42 would have been the figure yesterday with 44 possible if not on a tight schedule.
Traffic was surprisingly light yesterday.

I'm nowhere near that with my 60 D5.. In 10000kms I've done so far, I was NEVER able to get it under 8L/100kms (35 mpg?) but it stays under 9L/100kms (31mpg), no matter how I drive it (I just returned from a trip to Germany- doing 180+km/h for hours- and the consumption was around 8.7..)

I am surprised with a relatively small difference between urban/extraurban I achieve.. I expected the extraurban (80-120km/h) to be closer to the factory numbers (well, 5.5L/100kms is sci-fi I suppose- but I was hoping for say 6.5-7..) whereas I thought urban cycle would return 10-11L, realistically..

The new four cylinder engines seem to vary a bit more. I average around 36mpg, 7.8L/100kms, which means that short journeys are more thirsty. Regularly get 38mpg going a bit further.

I should say that I live in a very undulating area with main roads crossing valleys and/or following them. Not easy flat straight roads by any stretch of the imagination.

I am very impressed too. I seem to be getting much better mpg recently (7000 miles on the clock)

Last week I achieved 49.4 mpg on a 20 mile trip averaging 55mph.

Also a trip up to B'ham, around 150 miles, at 46mpg.

Ended up squeezing 585 miles out of that tank with a mixture of town and motorway driving.

I think 50 mpg on a long (motorway) trip is definitely possible, given the right conditions. The attached image is an extract from the driving journal (with a few additions) for my first car on a trip to Bearsden (near Glasgow) when it had only a few hundred miles on it. The journey up was via Northumberland and the Borders. Normal traffic both ways with no major holdups although an enforced 50mph for about 12 miles both there and back. Comfort mode, aircon on and PA2 use where appropriate. Being a new car I was probably varying the speed between 60 and 70 mph where I could. Now that this car has several thousand miles on it I think I would get even better consumption.

In summary, 47 mpg in 500 miles. The driving journal records fuel use to 1 decimal place so is probably reasonably accurate only on long trips.

I keep forgetting to save my trips so I haven't got any recent long journeys to show.

Get 10000-20000 miles on the clock and numbers will go up. Takes that long for the engine to “bed in” fully.

I have a reminder in my calendar to backup my driving journal, that fires every three months

So I have all the journeys saved in a spreadsheet.

At a steady 60 mph I average around 43 mpg, at a steady 50 mph I average around 46 mph, unfortunately due to my usual short trips my average is in my XC90 D5 for normal daily use is around 25 - 26 mpg around town.
