My guess...the engine is not getting fuel for some reason...there is usually a manual primer pump in most diesels in the engine bay, fuel pump or fuel pump control relay ??
A mechanic chap should be able to losen a diesel injector pipe to look to see if diesel is squirted out when you crank.

I had thought of this but I can't understand how the car was driving perfectly before this started. I would have thought that once the system was full of fuel there should be no reason for it to drop back from the injectors unless there is an air leak in the system. Thank you all for your comments which have been really useful. Will let you know what happens and if you get the problem sorted please let me know.

Does the XC60 have an electric fuel pump in the tank? This is definitely a fuel starvation problem but I need to locate this pump. Any help would be appreciated . Jim.

Default Xc60 not starting

Fatneck & Voltan - did you resolve the issue of your XC60 not starting? I am having exactly the same problem! Car intermittently fails to start (although cranks up) and has also been towed away recently but then appears to start fine once at the garage! Very frustrating and I'm nervous to drive it anywhere for school runs etc.

Have you checked the fuel pump fuse?

My XC60 didn't have a problem. it was a similar problem with a Clio. Using the spare key fixed the issue.

Default XC 60 d3

My 2011 d3 xc60 has done the same, drove perfectly, parked, next morning the engine swings as per normal, however does not start. I have checked in the trunk, removed the rear seat and looked everywhere,,,,, I cant find the pump??? Frustrated is not the word here. Can anyone tell me where the pump and the relay is located,,,I will be forever in your debt. I have googled xc60 in all shapes and form. Any assistance would be welcome? Thank you

Hi,
I would have thought one would be inside the fuel tank [low pressure] have a look at this item on Ebay.co.uk [I realise your not in the UK but you can still view the site] tap the number in the search for anything bar 352349251245
There may also be a high pressure pump 0n the engine also have a nose at 302652968880
This may help you see what your looking for
Hope it helps

Fuel pump fuse I believe is fuse 22 under the glove box, you may not have a fuel pump relay it maybe controlled directly from the cem?
