Default Trailer module

Finished the wiring using Volvo 13 pin kit. Checked and double-checked. Disappointed when nothing worked. Do I need the software update? Thought something would light up. Found the Volvo guide pretty useless and relied on the forum for most of the instructions. Taking the bumper off was a head-scratcher. My car does not have fixings on the bump rubbers. Clips all the way round after undoing the wheel arch screws.

Yes, it has to have new software before anything works, even sidelights.
It may also be a problem that you use a 2nd hand module. There have been discussions on the v70 forum stating that you need to remove the software from the old module before removing it from the old car. Don't know how true this is for all years.
A new module definitely didn't do anything on my 2016 xc70 until software installed.

I think someone commented on here that the only way to re-code (get the software to recognise) a used trailer module on another car is to wipe most of the cars software and reload it or something similar. If they try to simply download the software as they would a new module it doesn't work.

Used all new from Volvo main dealer. They have a monopoly on this software update. Can’t find anybody else who does it.

I've just had a quote of £170 to just install the software (with me DIY fitting electrics) which is crazy

Can anyone share what they paid and if possible recommend somewhere else to try not too far from Hertfordshire?

Cheers

Mine was done in Belgium - cost of the software itself was 20euro inc VAT (which should cost you more or less the same as it is what Volvo in Sweden charges volvo dealers inc their profit).

Installation (i.e. Few minutes at PC to input car/software details, Plugging a cable into the OBD port, fitting jumper leads to avoid flattening battery, then leaving it download for 20 mins) was another 28 euros inc VAT.

On various threads on this and the xc70 forums I have seen <£50 to about £95 all-in. Are you sure your quote is purely for the software install? Maybe they are quoting to supply parts as well because you can buy the harness and module for around £100?

Thanks for the info, very useful. Yes I'm sure as they have broken it down into £20 software cost plus £117 labour + VAT on both. Attempted daylight robbery! Will clarify with them as maybe they are charging a min 1 hours work or something. Will try other dealers in the area or just buy a third party vehicle specific kit that doesn't require coding. Can live without reversing sensor cut off.

I found very good service when purchasing my car from Reading Volvo (Waylands). Maybe worth giving them a call, think they are about 40 miles away from Watford.

Try sentinel in North London. They have cheap offer on software installation for Nav at the moment. Worth asking re towing module software.

Keep looking around as the genuine volvo one does a lot more than just switching off the reversing sensors. Take a look back in this and the v70 forum,
