Wow, I hope never to have to use this extremely well detailed guide. Thanks for the tip re making a counterhold for the crank. You've just saved me a trip to the dealership to firm up my Harmonic Balancer!

Default exhaust down pipe bolts

Hi wondering if it's possible to remove the down pipe bolts without getting under the car?
Or can one disconnect exhaust manifold but leave it in situ while doing this job ¿

Replied to your PM - thanks.

Yes, I think I was being an idiot in even undoing those flipping bolts in the first place. I think a more intelligent person would simply have eased the exhaust manifold back off the studs on the head without detaching it from the downpipe... I really don't know why I never thought of that.

Plan B was scrap the car.
Performance: Yes, the car was quite noticeably better after the job.
What's next? Nothing, I dearly hope. (Next obvious job is the timing belt on the 740 - but by all accounts that will be child's play compared to this. )

Hi and thank you for this post, I find it searching camshaft position sensor.

In your pictures under 57 and 60 I can see a hole, I have the same on my car and it seems to be leaking oil (http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=187166).

Could you tell me if there was something you remove from this hole, and if not was your car leaking oil from this ?

Thanks again.

Wow, thank you, Photobucket for destroying a very valuable thread. :-(

DWM: I'm considering purchasing a V40 with a blown headgasket and really could have used these pics. If you happen to still have access to them AND have the time to spare I could really use these...

Default considerable trepidation about your cam directions

I am getting some pushback about how you dealt with the cams and am being told that it is essential to get a cam locking tool, etc. I was also directed to a video showing the many difficulties of setting the cams and ensuring their alignment.

This is the video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqvItAiS4_0

This looks very complicated and difficult to do.

Following your procedure can I avoid this?

That video is for a different engine, so best to ignore. Setting the cams is easier with the locking tool, but as can be seen in the guide it can be done with blobs of paint. These engines are quite simple and so long as the cams are marked all very straight forward.

Default splotches

Sorry to be so late getting back to you but I have been suffering through a carpal tunnel problem for a couple of months.

But I am now back on the job. I would love to simply splotch the backs of the camshaft gears as show but on my engine I cannot reach them from the rear at all.

I do have a camshaft lock tool however.

I now have the camshaft gears marked and aligned with the cover marks and the crankshaft locating pin is about at the one o'clock position.

If I remove the other end of the camshafts and affix the locking device can I then proceed to the removal of the top of the engine secure in the knowledge that everything is kosher and as long as I do not move the engine while the head is off [will I ever get there!] that I can change out the head gasket, reinstall the head and be fairly confident that everything will still be aligned?

I will try to attach a picture of my engine, which is a B5254T, to show that I really cannot reach the rear of the camshaft gears with a paint brush.

I think the attachment of the picture worked.
