Installing an amplifier into a 940

So I've got a fairly large Alpine amplifier and seeing as my aftermarket head unit that a PO installed is pretty shoddy I thought I may as well install the amp I've got. However, I can't figure out where to put it! It's a huge car but there seems to be no space, has anyone got any advice on where to install one?

Are you on about a saloon or estate?

A saloon is easy, it can go on the back of the seats in the boot.

An estate is harder, all the space is far more useful without an amp in the way, how big is the amp?

With the estate, you have two cubby holes in the back behind the wheelarches, either side of the spare wheel well. Depending on it's physical size, your amp may fit into one of them then make up some brackets to mount it vertically.

If it's a saloon, back of the seats as suggested or hang it pendant-style with long bolts from the parcel shelf like a suspended ceiling.

I installed a CD multichanger on the ceiling of the estate just behind the rear seats. Can't be seen from the road, and doesn't get in anyones way.

Mine is tucked into one of the cubby holes behind the arches, same place as i've used before for the CD changer.

Doesn't interfere with the dog-guard that way!

Or fitting a sofa or fridge in the back.

Yup, its an estate!

Thanks for all that advice, I'll have a look and see if I can fit it somewhere. Not sure it'll fit into the rear wheel cubby. Will have a try, if not, might sell and get a smaller amp or just give up...I need the boot space more than anything!

Another option if it's an estate is similar to what i suggested under the parcel shelf in the saloon but under the big square cover over the spare wheel.

Ideally you want the heatsink uppermost, a couple of blocks screwed under the flap with some brackets to mount the amp on.

There's quite a big gap above the wheel so you might get away with it, not much airflow round that area though so if you do mount it there, might be an idea to get a couple of small 12v fans (computer sized fans) and fit them to guarantee airflow round the amp.

May be space under the passenger's seat? Failing that, rear cubby holes are your next best bet. The factory fitted CD changer is pretty chunky so can't imagine an amp being much bigger?

Don't forget the seats are height adjustable and also the heater ducts run under the seats. Also if any youngsters are ver carried in the back seats, you know what they're like for constantly swinging their legs and if they find something to kick at the end of each swing, so much the better! last thing you want is a sprog kicking seven bells out of your nice new amp!
