Most secondhand ones on these are knackered now unless they've been replace in the past on a scrapper.
Worth trying to get the crystal ones from the last of the C70s or aftermarket new ones.
If there's a couple of years or more of life in the car it's worth the investment.

Default Replacement headlights

Just get two new headlight units from Volvo ...about £400 pair if you're keeping the car for a few more years
They'll last longer and will fit properly
They come with bulbs!

Hi Phil, just a thought but might be worth trying a pair of up-graded bulbs like Bosch Gigalight Plus 120. Auto Express did a test on a number of bulbs. These bulbs should get you an MOT pass; well not you but your car. jack.

Highly unlikely, MoT fail for bad headlights on these is almost always due to the reflector going dull on these, VERY common fault. If so, no type of replacement bulb is going to help much. Best fix is new lights, I got a pair from PFV that were sensibly priced and appear to be of decent quality, they've certainly lasted a good few years now and perform as good as new still. They're absolutely fine with standard bulbs, friends who have travelled with me at night have commented on how good the headlights are.

Well worth spending a few quid on these cars to keep them up to scratch in my view.

Cheers!

Cheers tried the different bulbs so looks like the Volvo spec to sort it and a depth breath as I got the car for £95 more than a set of headlight lol

Default MoT fail is on reflectors not bulbs

No amount of brighter bulbs will cure tarnished reflectors. Faffing about with brighter bulbs is a not a cure. The headlamp units last 15-20 years - then reflectors have to be replaced, and all the tin foil solutions will involve many man hours and be poor temporary fixes. The plastic around the side lights always gets brittle so when those bulbs are replaced, bits crumble and make a hole to let in moisture.

As I've already said, grasp the nettle and get new units. An old car needs money spent on it but it will be less than the depreciation on a new or newer car. Losing thousands each year on a new car losing value is something people accept... and then jib at paying the same to fix an old car which cost them £1-2,000 and will need things doing each year up to that amount!
