Upgrading brakes when increasing bhp?
Hi all,
I'm after some advice on the brake setup for my C70 T5. I've been thinking about a few modifications and a remap to up the power, I would like to hit 300bhp. I need to change discs and pads as routine maintenance so I'm wondering if I should take the opportunity to upgrade? I will already be upgrading from 280mm front discs to 302mm, is that good enough? I normally use Pagid but I might go for genuine Volvo this time. My thinking is if the 280mm set up is good enough for standard then hopefully 302mm is good enough for 300bhp. And I'm not going to be using the brakes any more than I do at the moment in my day to day driving. So what do you think? If it is worth upgrading further than the 302mm set up are there any recommendations? Thanks, Mike

I take it your T5 didn't come with the 302mm upgrade? I thought all T5 S/V/C70s were fitted at time of production? Must have been a dealer option.
For normal everyday use, in my honest opinion, the 302mm upgrade is more than sufficient. Genuine Volvo Police spec pads have a softer compound so grip real nice but wear quicker. Just remember ATE supplied the brake systems for these motors Beyond the 302 upgrade it depends how deep your pockets are eg: AP Big Brake Kit

Stock 280s are frightening at best, I was happy with the 302's on my 850, genuine discs and pads were excellent for a road car.

Yes, 280mm on mine. I was surprised it didn't have the 302mm as most of them seem to but I guess it was an option.
I've always found the 280mm set up to be ok, just room for improvement. Not sure what discs and pads are on there at the moment, I've done about 30k miles in it now on the same ones that were fitted when I bought it. They must be very hard wearing. I've noticed a big difference between hot and cold stopping power so guess they are probably track day or race pads.

If you need more than 302mm, you're either on a race-track, or have vastly greater delusions than talent.
