Question Broken wheel trap : VOLVO's price is £460+VAT !

Hello, guys!

I need an advice and some help.

Due to the amazing quality of roads nowadays I have broken my alloy wheel.

of this type: https://accessories.volvocars.com/en...CC-480786/2014 (I have V60 D5 Auto SE Lux)

My local dealer just checked the price for me - and it is £561 with VAT and delivery (3 day delivery from Sweden).

This price is a bit... too high (using only nice and polite language here!)

There are no such wheels on ebay or scrapyard websites I have visited today.

Obviously, I need a car to go to the office and for everything else - I cannot sit and wait until something will be available on ebay or from local breaker.

Dear ALL - can you tell me please:

- option1 : for the same price (or even less) - get a full set of new wheels of the same size and put exusting tyres (will insurance qualify it as a modification?)
- option2 : for much less prices - get a full set of used (volvo?) wheels off ebay~similar - the same 8 x 18" size (will insurance qualify it as a modification?)
- option2 version-B - set of used volvo wheels from ebay with a different but compatible size? (this is definitely a modification for the insurer)
- option3 - "I'm totally fu%%%%d up and the only option is to buy original wheel for £561"
- option4 - is there a Volvo-oriented breaker website I can check? Any suggestions?

it looks like there are no cheap options available in a short period of time (if I only could afford to wait - I would wait for few weeks until the wheel of proper style will be on ebay or breaker's website, but I do not have that much time for this)

Thank you!

HI,
I had a similar issue, but just bought a cheap wheel that was odd whilst waiting for a refurb of the right style, whole lot better than having no wheel, in the past I have even put two of the same style on one side and two of another on the opposite as you never look at both sides......
I feel your pain with the roads

Three more options.

1. Claim the cost of the replacement off the local council. You will need evidence of where and when the damage was caused to prove your case. Might be a long slog.

2. Claim off your insurance and get them to try to recover your costs from the council to protect your NCB.

3. Have the wheel repaired if this is possible.

Definitely a sleipner wheel? The mefitis wheels look very similar too.

Welcome to car part pricing strategy

A non-original alloy rim costs between 100 GBP and 200 GBP

A Volvo original spare part, made and stored in a warehouse for potentially decades, will obviously cost more as you pay for
1. Price of the part including global compliance certification
2. Global parts database
3. Global logistics including print material and training
4. Guarantee of supply for something like at least 5 years after end of production

2 through 4 are the hidden costs that you do not see until you have to buy the part

This is why an original spare part can cost 2x to 3x the price of the aftermarket equivalent.

The aftermarket supplier doesn't have to bother with global logistics, guaranteed supply for x years, glossy printed brochures, global sales outlets, global staff training, and all that other stuff.

I suggest keep hunting around breakers.
The price of dealer parts is exactly why some breakers buy brand new vehicles and then strip them and sell them as spare parts. They can double their money easily, and still sell at below dealer prices.

But if you want the easy solution, then the 3-day wait is the simplest fix with guaranteed compatibility.
At a price of course.

Otherwise, fit after market wheels and sell your rims for 300 GBP each.
If you can find a buyer.....

Have you tried ebay on the continent? Many people's default search is set to UK only.....

There are some search firms that mail a request out on your behalf to breakers. 247spares springs to mind.

Personally I would go option 2 or option 2b in the first instance and keep an eye out for a single Sleipner wheel in the meantime. If you go for option 2b with 17" volvo wheel why would insurance class it as a mod? If anything you are reverting back towards 'base' spec. (I.e. Less tempting for thieves) with advantage of being less susceptible to potholes as well.

Just had a quick look here in Belgium and people are starting to sell off their winter sets.
Xc60 is favourite SUV out here, particularly as they are built here, so loads of them around. Using winter tyres is also common so loads to choose from (compared to UK).
Price range at the moment are around 600-750 euro for 18" with reasonable tread eg

Most people will understand English, particularly if they are in Brussels or Flanders. Holland is also a good bet to keep a lookout as they pretty much all speak English there.

I would not be surprised if the tyre pressure was too low if the wheel has broken , You really need to keep them to 38 to 40 psi for all the benefits it brings , The tyre takes the hit then, absorbing the shock rather than squashing up and the rim directly hitting the edge of the pot hole .

That's the average price of a Volvo wheel over the decades ... Many of the latest ones are £2000 with the tyre .
