Default Touch screens in cars

I'm staggered these are finding their way into production cars. Admittedly my only experience is from a Pioneer AppRadio3 I had fitted to my last car. It was lethal. There is nothing to 'feel', everything has to be located by eye, which means, albeit momentarily, your eys leave the road. Its illegal to use a phone in a car for good reason, so why do these reasons not extend to car controls.

Anybody unlucky enough to have these new systems fitted, please be careful.

Default Touch screens in cars

I agree mate, most look like piggin iPads blue tacked to the dashboard and I can’t see the difference between using one of these and a mobile phone.....

Every single car I've had with a touch screen can also be operated with voice commands by simply pressing a button on the steering wheel and telling the car what you want to do.
No need to even remove your hands from the wheel let alone take your eyes off the road.
I guess people will be requiring all cars to be automatics next so you don't get distracted changing gear?

Most mobile phones can now be voice activated, but it’s still an offence to use one whilst in control of a motor vehicle, the point the post makes is, what’s the difference.....

The difference is the legislation banning mobile phones was written before phones even had touch screens.

By that logic the buttons in a car should be banned as they are similar to those that phones had in those days.

No it isn't....

It’s illegal to hold a phone or sat nav while driving or riding a motorcycle. You must have hands-free access, such as:

a bluetooth headset
voice command
a dashboard holder or mat
a windscreen mount
a built-in sat nav

Do you look at the gearstick to change gear? No, you feel where it is.....Can your car change the temperature from 19 to 22c by voice control? My 6 month old xc60 says "Sluff " instead of Slough, "Arksfud" instead of Oxford. Good luck controlling your car.

Mine says "Re ring" instead of Reading, "Chorch" instead of church. I could go on for ages.

The OP is absolutely right - touch screens are completely the wrong technology for cars.

In my XC60, you can navigate the menus on the screen using the thumb wheel while diverting your eyes for a fraction of a second to select commands, songs etc.

I have used a touch screen in another car and it's necessary to take a long look at the screen, move your finger to the appropriate icon, often having to move the orientation of your hand in order to press a button close to the edge of the screen (because the screen is countersunk into the dash) and then keep looking to see if you did hit the button or missed it.

There is simply no question that this is far more distracting and involves take your eyes off the road far longer than using a thumbwheel with a non-touch screen, and therefore it is bound to be more dangerous.

It is just the wrong technology for the use case in question - controlling an computer system while driving and it staggers me that any car maker thinks otherwise.

And the Arksfud pronounciation is really bizzarre....
