You are most likely putting your foot or hand under the tailgate foot operated sensor under the rear bumper.

Could be inadvertently activating the "kick" sensor under the bumper.

EDIT: sorry, already been suggest above

The kick sensor only works if you have the key on your person.

Trying connecting the towbar electrics with the key in the car and not in your pocket.

On my previous MY16 XC90 R design I had similar, it isn’t the gesture tailgate as I always stand to the rhs of the towhook. Mine used to interfere with the tailgate when I pressed the tailgate button in the boot, not every time but occasionally it would cause the tailgate to shut. Not used the tow bar on my new car yet to try it.

Default ATC Indication & Trailer Lamp Test

I have noticed that the ATC takes longer to fire up than our previous car, once the car is connected it takes around twenty seconds plus for the ATC to react which if you are expecting an instant response can seem like quite a long time to wonder if all is well. The auto trailer lamp check then follows the ATC start-up.

Its the same on my XC90, and others report the same in previous threads. my old XC90's activated straight away.

Bit embarrassing but this was the case. This is now my new show off party trick! However be warned. People now keep waving their foot under my car and opening the tailgate every time I’m stood near the car.
