Hi ITSv40

As I understand it they clone the chip that is in the old key, and put that new chip into a new physical key. They don't move the old chip to a new key. Both keys should then work.

I believe that the normal Volvo procedure would be to record centrally that a key that has been lost, generate a new key code, associate it to the vehicle then program your vehicle to use it and to lock out the code for the lost key (so it cannot be used to steal the car). Something like that anyway.

I had a new key cut by a local key specialist, similar to Timpson, for my 850. Took a couple of weeks to order in the right key, he’d coded and cut it for £40. That was about 18 months ago, it has worked without any issues. Obviously not easy to find a key cutter with the right capabilities.

I believe the V70 is a different kettle of fish!

I suspect most of them are, yes, but mine's an early (97) V70 (with throttle cable/distributor etc.) and a few years ago I got a key copied by Timpsons in Woking, complete with chip etc. and it's worked fine ever since. However I suspect that this is because my car is pre-rolling code era.

You have to shop around for the right Timson outlet that can do these keys:~
The above is a franchise operation and it depends on what services the owner has purchased- ie some do- some don't.

Wigan don't
Lytham do but I haven't tried them for a Volvo key.
Bob.

I have a 1997 V70xc I have tried a few places that has been recommended. I even tried the main volvo dealer who went to great trouble trying to help, but after looking into it, all they could offer was a total new locking system and barrel with new keys!

I've given up :-(
