Obd11 code reader.

Hi guys,
Does anyone know if there is an OBD11 reader that came read the codes of a 1998 v70tdi please.
I have heard that volvo codes are hard to read by the public and must be done at a volvo dealer.

The 850OBD2 app for android phone works well with these cars although it's not particularly intuitive.

I can confirm that the kit listed works well with my 1998 V70 Tdi. However so far as I am aware it's only available for Android.

Is there something about a 1998 V70 that stops you from being able to use a simple OBD2 reading handset/box?

I spent ages thinking OBD2 was a Really Dodgy Thing, until I stopped trying to use free/cheap apps & dongle thingies and just went to a bricks-and-mortar car-parts place and spent all of about £40 on a handset thingy which just worked perfectly & first-time.
Cost me about as much as the oil I was considering changing & turned-out not to need changing.
But this was for something GM (volume leading to greater aftermarket support) and from 2014 (vehicle age), which may be two big differences.

Some years ago I bought an iCarsoft i906 scan tool for my 1999 petrol V70. It worked great and served me well for many years reading codes, pinpointing problems and, crucially, being able to reset the SRS warning light.. I'm planning, or at least hoping, to use it now on my recently purchased 2019 S90 T5 petrol turbo. If you can get a secondhand one from eBay or similar it covers your model year of V70. Looking through the menu items for your car it covers Engine control module, Transmission control module, ABS and SRS. The later cars have modules everwhere but perhaps the earlier models weren't so ECM top heavy. The only slight reservation I have is that until a couple of years ago I was able to get free on-line updates from the iCarsoft website but for some reason the scanner won't talk to the site anymore. Perhaps iCarsoft have stopped supporting the earlier models of scanner as they've moved on a couple of levels since I bought mine round about 10 years ago. If anyone else has the same issue of being locked out of the official website then let me know.

In answer to Forgs question, yes there is. A 1998 V70 is not fully OBD compliant despite the socket being labelled OBD2 and most code readers won't touch it. Nor will VIDA.

By 1999 this had changed and my understanding is that from 1999 on the cars were fully OBD 2 compliant so any competent reader should work.

It was exactly the same with the S/V40 series. Not compliant until 1999.

OBD-II became a standard in vehicles from the mid-'90s onwards, and your 1998 Volvo V70 TDI should be equipped with an OBD-II port.

While it's true that some manufacturers, including Volvo, may have specific codes or proprietary systems, most OBD-II readers should be able to retrieve generic trouble codes from your vehicle. However, for manufacturer-specific codes, it's recommended to use a scanner that supports Enhanced OBD-II functions.
