Just paint straight on, or any prep work first?

The original 23 year old tailpipe on the 850 was looking a bit worse for wear and starting to show a fancy laced pattern at the end where the tinwork had a feast. Searching online the tailpipes are no longer available although a copy part in square shape was available in galvanised steel which I didn't want.

This morning I paid a visit to my local exhaust fabricator about a repair on my XC90's exhaust and mentioned I needed a tailpipe for the 850 so he showed me a selection of tailpipes he had in stock. I returned with the 850 and unbolted the tailpipe and he welded a nice stainless steel pipe onto the original tailpipe.

Tail pipe looks smart, 4x4, although, I personally prefer the square'ish look on the 850 cut out.

Regarding the calipers...I did the same years ago after having them sandblasted and just brushed on some black Hamerite. They still look the same today.

Ohh...and something to relieve the boredom...the front pad retainer springs are stainless so clean up nicely with a bit of steel wool

Thanks Baffler, the tailpipe is original as the GLT never came with a square exhaust only a painted black round pipe

Your calipers turned out well, if I had been dismantling mine I would have blasted them before painting

I have used some paint I got from Halfords a couple of times. Once on calipers and once on the mini brake discs (the wife caught me with them baking in the oven!). Supposedly black but actually looks good on calipers (almost a cast like colour).

Thats just showing off - AP calipers indeed. I'll give you £50 for them

They do look very good in that colour.

I decided to give the rusty parts of the suspension a quick tidy up. They're never going to look brand new unless I remove them and have them blasted or replaced and I can't see any wear that would warrant replacement just now, so I've gave them the wire brush and sandpaper treatment and a quick coat of paint to at least make them look less rusty. Its not ideal and when I have to replace anything I will do a proper job as this will let me keep the car on the road short term

Followup on the spare wheel well...

When I collected the engine undertray I was given a plastic part for the spare wheel well. I really don't have a clue what the actual purpose is as the wheel doesn't move and can only think it might help prevent the tyre wearing away the paint, but I've fitted it for now...
