Never heard of a single DPF problem with a VEA, however intake system problems (mostly EGR cooler, but also EGR valve, swirl valve and even the intake valves) have been an issue for the VEA. But Volvo are actually pretty good at funding the corrective work though; my D4 has had a replacement cooler, valve and intake manifold complete with swirl valve mostly covered by Volvo goodwill during my 2 year ownership. There have also been several software upgrades specifically to address the deposition of soot (apparently by closing the EGR valve under a wider range of operating conditions) and also to flag a warning when/if soot build-up causes running issues. There was recently a huge VEA safety recall (probably still on-going) in relation to manifold/intake valve soot problems which means that these software updates 'should' have been performed, even on vehicles which have not been serviced by a Volvo dealer. So check the recall work has been done!

The VEA is a great engine, I'm genuinely impressed with the power delivery and economy. My VED is only £20, but some are zero (my R-Design model has bigger wheels, which I believe tips the balance into the higher category).

Advice on the older 5-cylinder engines would only apply to AWD vehicles. The post-2013 facelift models you appear to be seeking use the VEA engine on FWD versions.

Our VEA D3 R-Design’s VED is a rip-off at £30.

For everyday use I think you will find that there is very little difference between the D3 and the D4. We run a 2016 V60CC D3 and compared to our other car, a 2020 BMW 320D, it is similar in response and performance. Only at Motorway speeds above 150-160 km/hour is there a noticeable difference in performance.

I love my V60 D5, never had any DPF trouble in over 50000 miles of motoring.
I get nearer to 50 mpg most of the time, but mine is a manual.
Also £30 a year tax.

I have a D3 s60 with automatic gearbox. It's a 6 speed one. The car is rapid but above 60 mph i miss some more power when you want to take over. I'm considering to give it a stage 2 tuning. I love the car. Drove audi A8, jag, BMW 7 series for work but this one is much better.
