@ marc

Volvo Edinburgh I've only had 2 services done on our 2017 XC90, but can't say anything bad. First year service was as expected - nothing needing done. One can baulk at the costs of a main dealer service, but it's no different from any other manufacturer really.

Second service in Year 2 they found an oil leak - which led to finding another oil leak - which led to finding another oil leak. I'd not spotted any leak, no oil on drive, and no dashboard notification. So that was a good spot by them. They had the car for 4-5 days in the end, and while I hadn't booked a courtesy car given it should have only been in for one day, they eventually found me a V60 after Day 3 when I said wife needed a car. Equally, all done under warranty without any quibble. Powerpulse hose done at same time.

Someone else mentioned the video - I got the same - you get a walk around by the tech guy who shows you tyre tread wear & brake wear at each of the 4 corners as well as a overview of the car status in general. Our front tyres weren't far off needing replacing, but they didn't try and force a sale. Ditto brake pads and discs - they said how many mm left and that all was fine for now.

So, overall, have nothing negative to say. I'm sure some folks would have jumped up and down at not having the car for 4-5 days but hey-ho, there's buses, trains, taxi's, bikes, and your own feet

I cant find anything positive to say about my experiences with main dealer servicing at Mill (Stoneacre) at Stockton.

After parting with the thick end of £500 for a 36,000 mile service they missed a warning light on the emissions control system, got the the tyre tread depth wrong, overfilled the engine oil, missed a low adblue level light and botched the cabin air filter replacement.

I don't think Volvo care about their customers. Roll on March 2021 when the lease expires on my XC90

I don't think that's quite fair. My Volvo dealer is first class. The dealer isn't owned by Volvo.

I have been very pleased with the service provided by my Dealer, Donalds Volvo of Ipswich.
Everyone at the Dealership is very courteous and the Master Tech always comes into the showroom to speak to me about the car, and explains any issues that I may have.
I receive the video of the work on the car whilst sitting in the showroom enjoying their coffee!
No doubt there are Dealers of all marques who don’t come up the expectations of their customers and they should get their act together as it is easy lose customers through lack of care/knowledge.

Not really about quality more price.
My 2017 V90 (before I sold it last month) had around 7000 miles on the clock and was due 2nd service. As most of the service schedule is based on milage not time I was disappointed when my local dealer only offered the standard service around £450. I contacted Ray Chapman who informed me they could do an off menu service to provide the needs to maintain the warranty and give full software updates carwash etc for circa £220.
If I had kept the car I would have had a day in York. Why my local dealer just wanted to take my money rather than meeting the needs of my car comes as no surprise.
My only advice is be prepared to drive 50 miles or so to get better value for money.

Its all a bit depressing isn't it, with just a few shining examples. Unfortunately, all my good examples are now well in the past: Ivor on the parts desk at Lex in Bristol (no longer there), would easily translate my request for a 'whatsitcalled thingmy" immediately into the desired part for my 240. The Chippenham dealer, MRG, was excellent all round until the principal sold up without offering his team the chance for a management buy out (they've all left now - some like Simon Chui the service manager into a senior position in Volvo UK, pictured in the last VOC magazine); Paul Simmons sales at Bristol (couldn't stand working there, left now at a Seat dealer in Swindon), but he was friendly open and honest at all times and part of the reason I gave up trying to buy my current car outside of the dealer network); Miles on service at the same dealer - maybe slightly patronising, but understood what I wanted and provided the service, but left (to become a driving instructor).
My conclusion? It's always mostly down to individuals (though if they are senior in the dealership can influence others).

Is it just me or are the good experiences generally from independents (and very small chains) and the bad experiences generally from big chains?

There's no pattern to it. I've had great and dire service at different Land Rover dealers, both independent and both now defunct. Very poor service from two Audi dealers which were part of a large group. Good service from an independent VW dealer that eventually became a group of dealers, who went to the wall to become non-franchised single depot specialist. Good service from my local Volvo dealer. Good service from local village independent mechanic that I've used for decades.

Everyone makes the occasional mistake. What I cannot abide is dishonesty. The Audi garages I used, both large main dealers, took dishonesty to a higher level. One located near Shrewsbury and the other at Swansea.

Default Lancashire or West Yorkshire recommendation?

I’ll be taking delivery of my MY20 V90 very shortly and will be looking for somewhere to service it that does a decent job. I travel from Lancashire to Leeds and back every week so am pretty flexible on where I can take it, provided I can have a loan for the day.

Preston would be my nearest dealer but a friend has had very poor experiences there. I’m buying the car from Bury and have been depressed by the competence of the sales people there - which may be unfair as the people in the garage could be great.

Would anybody recommend a West Yorkshire or Lancashire dealer as outstanding, in their experience?

I couldn't agree more. I live on Tyneside & Ray Chapman York are my preferred dealer (160Mile round trip).

Just had my Survey from Volvo following the last service & sung their praises on that as well.
