Second one sounds like my engine.
These are 3 second videos taken in 2017 by prior owner of my car. I think my noise is front of engine timing gears. https://youtu.be/4_WwlCUN62s https://youtu.be/nZvGXeFm674 |

If you can do it safely a broomstick held against the timing cover with the end in your ear can be quite revealing. BE CAREFUL if you do it. It certainly does have that timing gear sound and they may have upgraded the B16 fibre gear to the safer B18 type. Good luck with it.
Blue's engine running rather too fast to get any idea as to what's happening. Last edited by Derek UK; Jun 16th, 2020 at 12:44. |

Took some advice and checked rocker lube holes, three were dry. Soaking in cleaner and will blow through tomorrow. See If that makes a difference.

I thought you had singer sewing machine noise (tappets), but I also hear what I think is front end noise. I wasn't too worried about the tappet noise.

Thought I might strip down the assembly and clean and check everything. Are the "springs " under tension,if I remove the end circlip will everything fly off? Blue, when you say "front end what precisely are you referring to?

The rocker gear comes apart very easily for cleaning. The springs aren't very strong but hold the end rocker when you take off the clip. Again you have to squeeze them all together to refit the second clip. I would put the rockers back in the same positions as they were originally.
Use rubber gloves as the oily residue is very sticky. A satisfying job though. Brake cleaner after a scrub in diesel or paraffin. Polish the shaft. It might show some wear marks on the underside but there shouldn't be any grooved wear. Tiny oil hole in the rocker must be clear. I gave my B18 oil holes a quick buzz with a Dremel and a 45º stone to allow them to catch oil splash easier. The B20 ones I had came with those from the factory so Volvo also thought it a good idea even if it took them a long time to consider it so! You can also face off the pads with a carborundum stone if they are a bit worn. Grind to match the curve with the rocker in a bench vice of some sort. |

Done that, not that. Next step the timing gears.
BTW,when bumping the car during tappet adjustment which is the best gear to be in? I use third.

With the plugs out, if you put it in top, you can wind the car back and forth using 2 hands on a front wheel. Should be easy on your nice drive but a few feet in the garage should be enough. I haven't used that method for a while as I don't have a flat surface. With the plugs out, the engine turns easily using the fan if you don't want to use a socket and bar on the crank nut. If the fan slips the belt may need adjusting.
