Interference engines
The subject if which engines are interference and which are not pops up now and then but wanting to get all of the info in one spot I'd like to ask which is which and whether the same engines in different markets are different. I have the 2l engine in my '92 SE and I believe that is interference but what about the various models of the 2.1l and 2.3l. Lists on line do contradict each other even those of timing belt companies.
Yes I have read of broken belts changed at the side of the road and the trip completed with just an hour lost but you can only do this if it's a non interference engine. Comprehensive list wanted please. |

Plenty of warmish discussions on the 700/900 forum on this subject over many years - I know what (UK market) engines are non-interference - including mine - that's all that concerns me.

The only engines that spring to mind as a problem are the B19 series and the B230K engines.

Derek you have a seriously good question. I think you want a specific and as near as possible definitive list. I suspect a lot of 240 (and lesser variant) Volvos would like that best available information in one place.

4-Valve (i.e. twin-cam) units are interference; otherwise B21 and B23 are non-interference, B200 and B230 except K-suffixed examples are supposedly non-interference. The K-suffixed units have a different combustion chamber to the rest of the 2-valve motors.
As remarked elsewhere on this thread, there are differing opinions on the subject but I know from experience that B21As are non-interference.

The problem with this issue/thread is that every poster thinks their view is the correct one.
