940 Dilemma! Advice appreciated
Hi Guys
I am looking to purchase a 940. I have the choice of two locally. One is a H reg 940 SE (non-turbo) with about 130,000 on the clock with service history while the other is a k reg 940 turbo Wentworth with 150,000 on the clock and no service history. Which is the best one to get? Is it a trade off between miles and age (lower mileage but two years older) or does the turbo and wentworth trim make the difference? I can't really find out what the difference in trim and performance is on these models so any info would be welcomed! Cheers |

Keep looking
I'd stay well clear of a non turbo 4 cylinder car - they're underpowered and you'll be regretting the purchase from day 1.
The Wentworth will have the 2.0 turbo (155bhp) engine fitted - its a superb car, but at that mileage you need to expect a few repairs. Get someone who knows Volvo 940s to thoroughly check it out before you pay any money over - while 940s are sturdy and usually reliable, they can get abused - and its the next owner pays for that abuse! A turbo will cost you circa £400 for example, plus fitting. Aircon rarely works in cars found for sale - due to the cost of repair and market value of the cars. Trim difference is negligible btw - the Wentworth is based on the SE but has half leather upholstery, and either sunroof or aircon. Most items were available as optional extras. I'd recommend you buy on condition rather than mileage - but get it checked thoroughly to avoid buying a money pit!

Hi, It also depends on the type of driving you will be doing, will you want to tow things, are there a lot of speed cameras in your area, will you be doing a lot of motorway driving. The 2.0 non turbo in manual has about the same performance as a Ford Mondeo 1.6 Estate. I would not recommend 2.0 non turbo auto due to fuel costs. I would agree with RT that condition is most important. Also bring some friends on test drive to simulate a full load. I don't know what year a H reg is but bear in mind a lot of improvements occured in '93-'94 ( Drivers airbag, 3 point middle seat belt, a-roll bars on some cars, ABS on many cars) SIPS body structure came in '92 on.
