Default Engine Replacement For A Volvo 740gl

I Would Like To Change My 2l Petrol Engine For A More Economical 2l Engine With The Same Power But Better Fuel Economy. I Have Thought About Putting A 2l Mondeo Engine In But Dont Know Where To Start. Can You Help, Also My Brake Pedal Is A Bit Soft How Do I Increase The Preasure To The Pedal?

Thanks

Garry

bleed the brakes, that should sort the 'squishy' problem

mondeo engine? - why. its made by ford. yeah its revvy etc but in a heavy volvo, nah

how about getting rid of your B200 for a B230LT (i think thats the code)

to be honest, unless you go deisel the car is always goign to thirsty, although my 740GL 2.3 on carbs manages 30mpg round town (B230A)

maybe your 200 just needs a bloody good service

and i see you not far from me with you WS11 postcode!

the codes come from volvo themselves.

they are probably all on here there abouts

B200A - 2 litre Carb, fitted to 740s, 240s
B230A - 2.3 Litre carb as above
B230E - 2.3 fuel injected
B200E 2 litre as above

its pretty self explanatory, im sure there must be a guide somehwere but its like this

A - Carb
E - Fuel Injected
(somthing) T - Turbo
200 - 2.0 litre
230 - 2.3 litre

then there are the white block and red block engines, which as i believe, is as follows

White - 16v
Red - 8v

Then it starts to get into different gearbox codes, some for overdrive, some for 4 speed, 5 speed etc. it gets mad with all the differnnt codes, but us geeks usually know which our car has

for instance mine has a B230A/K

my vw corrado has a 9A - 2.0 16v

all manufacturers have codes

vauxhall - 2.0 16v - C20XE
2.0 16v turbo - C20LET
1.4 8 valve - C14NE

all the different letters refer to different parts fitted to each engine

So Mine Is A B200e With A White Box Then?

My Car Sounds Ok At Low Revs Without And Pedal, But When I Press The Pedal It Sounds Like A Pinking Rattleing Sound, The Aa Said They Always Sound A Bit Chuggy, Is That Right, If Serviced Can I Get It To Run Nice And Quiet And Smooth Under Acceleration?

Can You Tune It Like You Can A Carb, Or Do You Need To Chip It To Tune It?

This Volvo Is The Only Car I Have Had With The Cooling Fan Running All The Time And I Love The Sound The Fan Makes When Accelerating, But The Other Noises Spoil My Fun.

Also What Does This Engine Name Mean B5204fs

I Know Its A 5 Cylinder 2l Engine From An 850

Also I Have Been Told This Will Fit Into My Car, But Told By Someone Else That It Wont, Does This Engine Run Smoother And Does It Use As Much Fuel?

no idea about the B5 lump

if yorus is a B200e then yeah its the fuel injected car, and would need mapping, or a chip to see results, which aint as easy as tweaking the richness screw and idle vavle on a carb, yeah an 850 lump would fit your car, probably on the same mounts, but im not sure, the 850 box obviously wouldnt though as its a front wheel drive gearbox, but yours would probably do the job

you may need an adapter of some sort though, im not entirely sure,

my engine is lumpier than my fuel injected corrado at low revs, and when i put my foot down, but its a 20 year old engine, 20 year old cars are like that. im guessing yours is around a 1990 model, which would still be 15 years old now, so unless you throw a modern fuel injected computer controlled everything engine in there, its never going to run really smooth. but if thats what you want, i would recommend buying an 850/V70/S40/V40/ or a late 940/740 (ive seen one of these on a 1998 R plate!!!!)

The Acceleration Is A Bit Lumpy And Top Speed Is An Est 95mph, 0-60 Is About 14-18 Seconds, And Sometimes Loses Power For A Second At About 2500rpm. Im Going To Service It Next Month And See If That Helps. I Am Going To Get The Fuel Filter Air Filter And Oil And Oil Filter Changed And See If That Helps. As I Accelerate I Get A Surge Of Power Between 2000 And 2500rpm Before I Hit The "flat Spot" At 2500rpm Then At About 3000rpm It Takes Off And Accelerates Like My Old 1.8 Mondeo Used To. My Car Is A H Reg 740 2l Estate In A Light Grey Colour, It Had A Oil Leak That Has Been Sorted By Adding That Gunky Stuff To The Oil.

Has That Shed Any Light?

Do You Get Better Mpg From Carbs?

I Just Want It To Run Right And Smooth, But Dont Want To Throw Money At It That Might Help It.

carbs arent as effieiecnt as fuel injection.

a thing that may help is too clean out the oil breather - its in a thread in here i started, that will help wonders to make an old car erun smoother - give that a go
