Question 760 GLE Auto - Cutting Out

Hello

I have a 760 GLE automatic estate. On three occasions it has suddently stalled (or cut out), twice when the engine was cold and once when it was hot. The temperature gauge has also stopped working. So my question is:

* What is causing the engine to just cut out; and
* Is it linked to the fact that the temperature gauge no longer works, or is that a separate issue?

Thanks

Mary

The cutting out problem sounds like the fuel pump relay. If you search the forum, this seems to be a common recurring problem on 700 series cars. A new one from GSF/partsforvolvosonline.com or similar is about £18 plus VAT and is easy enough to change. If you do change the relay, bear in mind that cars without a cat use a green relay, and cars with a cat use a white relay. nothing worse than finding you've got the wrong part after taking the trim panel off!

The temp gauge on the dashboard has it's own sensor and isn't linked to any other engine function. This problem could either be the sensor, which on the b280 engine (1988-1990) is located at the back od the block on the passenger side and is fairly accessible and not an expensive part (replacing this cured a similar problem in may car). It could also be the connections on the back of the gauge in the dash panel. Again, dodgy connections here seem to be a common problem in the 700 cars. It usually seems to cause fuel gauge problems, and there are several threads in the forum on how to solve it.

Good luck.

Unhappy Cutting Out Saga

Many thanks to JamesM for his advice. We've not had a chance to put
things right yet, however, the cutting out seems to be more frequent and I'm now getting another problem. Sometimes as I'm driving along, it starts to
pull, as though it's trying not to notch up a gear (the car's an automatic). If you put your foot down hard, it eventually kicks in.

JamesM advice was regarding 700 series cars, but I believe there are several different types of engines and the 760 (which I have) is completely different to the 740s. Would that have any bearing on the problem?

Thanks
Mary
