Default 760 mystery

My wife drives an 89 760 auto estate
Mysterious fault that has no patern, time frame or logic and I wonder if anyone has any ideas

Starts up from cold on 99.999 occassions, no problem
Run for about 3 miles and stop. Most times will re-start ok but out of the blue will not start and sits and sulks for about ten minutes. Now this is ok in a car park, if a tad boring, but it did a grand cut out the other day on the move, and had to be pushed to road side before the time lapse.

I cant see anything obviously wrong, good plugs coil etc, any ideas please?

Thanks

Chris

Sounds like the fuel injection relay needs replacing. There are loads of threads on this forum covering these if you do a search.

The part is about £20 from GSF or partsforvolvosonline.com and is easy to replace.

The relay board is behind the central console and can be accessed by removing "L" shaped trim that covers the side of centre console and the underside of the dashboard on the drivers side. The relay is green and just pulls off the board (if your car has a cat the relay may be white).

good luck.

You may find that there are two clips (one at each side) used to 'lock' the relay in place. These can be a problem to get at.

Chris

I'm experiencing the same problem as your wife with my 1990 760 auto estate. If you try JamesM suggestion, and it works can you post a reply and let us know.

My husband is still recovering from an operation, so is unable to have a go at sorting it out.

Regards

Mary
