Default passenger air bag switch

Hi,can anybody help me with a problem I have got with the passsenger air bag switch?
A warning light above the rearview mirror is showing ''passenger air bag swiched off''.I have looked at the switch on the end of the dashboard, but it is switched to the -on- position.I have swiched it on and off but it make no difference. As anybody got any advice ,please.
Thanks

It could be the switch is defective. Is this switch at the end of the dash where it is covered by the closed door?

But the problem may be unrelated to that switch. My wife's 2007 XC90 sometimes gives that 'passenger airbag off' message and that car doesn't have the airbag disabled/enabled switch.

Could it be the sensor in the seat is defective? I think there may be a weight sensor in the passenger front seat bottom to shut off the airbag if a child is sitting in the front seat. This message doesn't show if there is no one in the seat because either there has to be some weight in the seat for it to show and maybe the seat belt buckle must be clipped in.

this light should flash on for a short while every time you start the car just to test the warning light .. As obviously it is very important you know the state of the switch and that the warning light is working ...
