I drive a 6 Speed manual 2.0D (2005 MY) so i can't comment on the auto MPG... (I get around 50mpg average but I'm on motorways 90% of the time)
with regards to comfort; I find the seats comfortable and supportive and in general the interior is nice place to sit, but I find the pedal box a little narrow and being 6'3'' i sometimes think the seat could do with going back and down a bit further... but that is a minor gripe. I drove a V50 D2 (1.6D) R-Design and an S40 D4 (2.0D 5cyl) R-Design for about a month each; and although i really love the look of the seats, i wouldn't swap my black leather. The cream leather seems susceptible to colour transfer (e.g. from jeans) and the alcantara picks up crud. If boot space is a must, get a V70. The V50 has a usable boot but its not huge. The whole "its a Ford Focus" argument has never bothered me... You could say that a Rolls Royce is just a BMW!!! Hope this helps. |

Hi, Thanks for the feedback about the cream seats. Has anybody else had experience with these? Does the normal leather wear well? Is the quality good? Is black a better choice? How about the T-tec? I would prefer a V50, boot space is not essential, but I have read the seat comfort and quality is better, and would last longer. Comfort is my first priority, plus mpg. |

I've had 17's and 18's on my S40.
Given the choice, 17's every single time without a moments hesitation. |

You will be more comfortable on fabric seats; warmer in winter and cooler in summer and overall nicer to your skin. |

However I do spend a lot more time worrying about the leather, and i never had to rub conditioning cream into fabric seats. |

I find the grey leather seats in my S40 T5 are not supportive enough for cornering and they're perhaps a bit narrow. I would expect the V70 seats to be bigger and more comfortable? Leather is not for everyone and can be slippy, too hot, too cold etc. I always thought the best compromise was half-leather/alcantara? for grip.
Here's my seats at 5 years old and there's barely a mark on them: Volvo seats are very well shaped and tend to 'fit' you everywhere, you'll notice the upper part of the seat and headrests are very close fitting. The ride of the Dynamic Chassis found on sport models and T5's etc with 17" wheels is firm....firm enough for you to keep a close eye on pot holes and avoid them. I'll be honest now and say that I'm driving an 05 Astra Van at the moment (with the T5 sat at home) and I'm really enjoying how the Astra just mushes through bumps and pot holes without a flinch. Anything with 15/16" wheels, squishy tyres and some suspension travel is a must if you want super-comfort on our rubbish roads. Having said that, on the motorway my car sits planted and very composed. I suffer a bad back and can honestly say my seats have never given me any pain even after 4/5 hour journeys. It's just the bumps in town that bug me.
